A charging handle has a more direct line of pull on the bolt being above the bolt by about 1/4 inch.

To each his own I guess. I have used t-handle extraction method and the side-charge handle extraction, and i personnaly prefer side pull.
I extract with palm side up, giving a good firm pull, but not a jerk, all the way back, and release. Never a struggle for me to extract in that manner.
