I have a 16" Tactical rifle and it is my dedicated deer rifle. 120 grain Barnes TSX. It's short, light and doesn't bang on stuff if you have to move it into position in a stand. I have shot it out to 600 yards in practice, but for hunting would only feel comfortable out to 300-400 yards.
I have a 20" Hunter and it is my dedicated Field Precision Rifle. I currently shoot 120 SMK's at 600 yards and it holds moa very well at that range. I am constantly looking to tighten the moa, but am quite happy with the performance.
I have to agree with Bicyclewrench, if you may shoot at varying distances, get both. Look around, if you keep your eye open you can find some good prices on uppers. I did.
BTW- To date I have not chronoed my loads. If it shoots tight groups that's all I need. I don't think the target cares if it gets there in .65 seconds or .64. Lol
