Even without the brake the damage is still occurring, you just notice it more.
It is not the pressure that is most damaging, it is the decibel level, the pressure is just a perceptible clue as to what is occurring.
Overpressure alone can damage hearing but we are talking about a great deal more pressure than the damage from the decibel level.
In short, yeah wear hearing protection.
I don't do it hunting but I don't exactly dump a mag.
I will be getting some walkers tactical ears, hopefully I will get some for Fathers day.
