With a single stage trigger keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
Placing your finger on the trigger is the first stage. It is a light touch. Then squeeze for the second stage.
A 2 stage trigger is safer if dropped. That is why it is used on older military rifles. I don't know why it was abandoned on the M16.
