Buffer weights are a function of barrel weight on military guns to counteract carrier bounce. The heavier the barrel, the heavier the buffer needs to be for automatic fire, otherwise you have a hammer falling on an unlocked bolt, and you get FTFire malfunctions. That's why Colt made different buffers for the original M4A1/M4s vs the SOCOM barrel profile M4A1.
