Pit Bulls are seldom strays. They require too much care. (I know, my wifes lap dog is a pit!)
A big pit bull at large is almost always a drug dog that someone got tired of and quit taking care of.
I don't generally advocate shooting dogs, but you did the right thing. I'm surprised you got the chance, pits typically are "wade in" no matter the odds! One of my friends says, "Pits don't always start the fight, but they ALWAYS finish it, dead or alive."
My wifes dog had no problems going after 2 much larger Dobies, when she was threatened. I was able to seperate them with the help of the Dobies owner, who was completely surprised at their response to her. They intiated the discussion, but she was more than happy to continue it to the end. She had the larger Dobie down and the second completely confused when we seperated them. They both easily outweighed her by 20-30 pounds, and yet she was definitely top dog.
Free roaming pits need to be immediately captured or, if that is not possible, put down. Not because they attack more than other dogs, (they don't), but because they do not stop once the button is pushed.
