In a hunting scenario, the water is more important than the basic load of ammunition. When hunting in the mountains of New Mexico, I never carried more than 20 rounds during my day outings. Since weight was an issue, I felt that survival gear so that I could be away from base camp for a night was of upmost importance. Have you given consideration to replacing ammo pounches with larger pouches to carry matches, first aid, naptha, space blanket, etc?

I always carry survival kit on me, mostly in my clothing for the small items. That was SOP for us in units that had mission profiles focused on operating far away from large logistics footprints, and well behind enemy lines.

The sleeve pockets played a big role in that for me and still do. I keep an MRE accessory pack, which has matches, TP, wet wipe, salt, sugar, and other items packaged in sealed plastic. I also have 2 lighters, pocket knife, multitool, aviator's signal panel, 550 cord, and my Woobie (Poncho Liner).

I don't carry a basic load when hunting, and fill the ammo pouches with candy bars/energy bars, radio, and sunglasses.
