I just finished my first build, and it came in a little under a grand, minus optics. I shopped around for the best prices on good parts but didn't cheap out or compromise on parts I wouldn't be happy with. Major parts included Aero upper and lower, Alexander Arms lightweight 16 inch barrel, lower parts kit from Tom's Tactical with upgraded nickel-teflon coated trigger parts, milspec buffer tube and MFT Minimalist stock (great price for this package, $139.95 shipped and the trigger is very good), JP adjustable gas block ($59 from E Arthur Brown), Odin BCG ($141.95 from Joe Bobs).
