There is some evidence that they are right. Since the 1934 NFA was enacted, murders committed with machine guns seems to have plummeted from when there were no limitations on sale of machine guns to private citizens.

Another example is the complete ban of firearms in federal prison. Firearm deaths is a non issue to inmates because of this ban resulting in a safe rehabilitating environment.
