If they cloned Sheriff Joe Arpaio and had him run the prison system in Chicago/Crook County, repeat offenders would be dramatically reduced.
On one hand, you hear about how evil America is for putting people behind bars.
Then on the other, we are criticized for not being tough enough on crime.
In all the under-developed countries I've been to, police are lucky to make the equivalent of $200/month, so they take bribes for common crimes as a way of making a living out of necessity. As a result, most of the people who belong in jail are free to roam, which is why the US is hard to find even on a nationally-ranked crime list when you look at per-capita violence.
What you will see are people picking raw numbers, not acknowledging that the US is the 3rd largest population in the world, with one of the least population densities. Once you look at per capita, you need to squint as you scroll through the list or you'll miss it. We're nowhere near the top. It's a very safe Nation to live in, where you have a fighting chance to protect yourself in or outside of your home.
