Perhaps I'm mistaken, but it seems like it would also be quite a big negative to those in the middle ground: The general public who has no interest in owning such rifles, and sees no value in having them on the market. There are also legislators who may be "on the fence" about the subject.

Since I've never heard of an AR15 being used in self-defense, I'd wager that such events are so rare as to be dismissed for statistical insignificance.

and I haven't been able to think up a good counter-argument. How about, "Never bring a knife to a gun fight."

While that's a cute phrase, it's not the least bit helpful in countering the emotional impact of 100 people being maimed and murdered by one lunatic with an assault rifle.
