As a Californian (currently a San Franciscan at that) it gets harder and harder to deal with this place. But I've been to 16 countries, and better than half the states in the US for various reasons, and honestly have not been anywhere I would (other than gun issues and rent/housing) rather live.
There's been an ongoing push here to split the state into two. Although in reality three small states would probably better represent it. The counties north of San Francisco tend to be very liberal in a true sense of the word. People generally just want to be left alone to live as they see fit. (Maybe more along the lines of libertarians) Eastern CA down through the central valley and high desert, tends to be much more conservative, but they and Nor-Cal are politically overshadowed by the population density of the coastal cities from SF to LA which tend to be much more of the rabid "liberal is a bad word" kind of liberals. Where "you can have any kind of liberty you want, as long as the kind we approve of" sort of thinking prevails.
