Within the past few days, 2 men have been killed while out shooting long range, which makes no sense to me at all.

The problem is, they were downrange with a family member or friends when it happened.

The first one was a few days ago. Father and son, with the son downrange intentionally "spotting" for grandpa. The son was 27, father of 2 new beautiful twin girls.

I don't know where anybody got the idea that it was remotely safe to stand next to a target to "spot" for someone, but it's not. He was shot through the chest with a .30 caliber rifle, and died on the scene.

The incident occurred at about 4 p.m. when 27-year-old James Shurtz and his father Glenn were out shooting targets in a remote area off of State Route 30, approximately 20 miles west of Snowville, according to a press release from Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office. The Shurtz’s had multiple targets set up at different ranges and were shooting at them with a high-powered rifle.

The sheriff’s office described the temporary range as east to west with targets west of the shooter.

“Father and son were alternating positions; one would shoot and the other would be downrange as a spotter.

Now today, a guy was downrange on a private ranch as part of a long range shooting event.

Authorities said two men were practicing long-range shooting while another man was down range marking targets for them.

There was a miscommunication and one of the target shooters hit and killed the man down range.

Just no folks. Just no. This is not the correct answer. If you are doing any kind of shooting, please make sure someone with proper training is there, and safety protocols are being followed. I would suggest studying the NRA safety rules, and getting NRA RSO certified.

Why these two events happened is just complacency or stupidity, and a bullet does not care.
