I have solved the mystery on the turret shift. I have been in a hurry/lazy taking the rifle out of my fleece lined slip. I have been just undoing the top and dragging the rifle out catching the turret. How did I find this I did it again tonight, this time I could hear the turret turn. Lesson learnt, every day is a school day.
Yeah - that same action cost me an easy 100 yard shot on a song dog because the windage and elevation turrets on my M223 scope do NOT lock, while the much less relevant side focus does. This says something about scopes without tactical turrets possibly being better suited for hunting.
