Notice that humility is used to describe him, not seeking recognition to the point that this went unknown but to those who were there for almost half a century.

Notice also the pain he still bears all these years later. Butch still feels guilty about not being on patrol that day, wondering if things would have been different if he had been there. Sacrifices for country take many forms and this is one of them.
