Seems to me that rifling — in all our guns — is a necessary evil, interfering with the "pure" expansion of burning gas and the bullet's trip down the barrel.

So it is NOT intuitive, to me, that the rifling is needed to actually add pressure to the system to produce the velocity.

Sounds logical to me, John. The 120mm main gun of the Abrams tank is smoothbore, and achieves beaucoup velocity.

You could test the idea by having a smoothbore 6.5mm barrel made...
