On another thread, javelin missiles were mentioned. The last I heard, these things cost many shitloads of dollars each. This made me think of this thread.
What if an evolved insurgency decided to hit Americans' most sensitive spot--- their wallets.
As tragic as it may be, we Americans, as a group, become accustomed reports of killed and maimed soldiers in far-off lands. I am sad to say that when I viewed a posted video of an American convoy being attacked by taliban I had to remind myself that those were our soldiers being killed and maimed. If you think about it, this real video's quality was not nearly as good as those that we see every day in movies, TV, and video games. My guess is that the shooting conflicts are pretty much ignored by most Americans.
What if that same insurgency was able to use the internet and widely post the costs of:
a) Deploying our troops
b) Medical treatment needed for injured soldiers
c) Buying and replacing the weapons and equipment
d) Long term expenses for medical care and rehabilitation of our troops
e) Disability payments and Social Security expenses
----And then tell Americans how much this costs per working American and that this will RAISE OUR TAXES! I think that the American public would go berserk! At the very minimum, the American public would loudly insist that all of our troops immediately come home and stop wasting taxpayer money.
A much worse case scenario, and I do not agree with the following, but I will play fear-monger here:*
An extreme reaction (fairly unlikely, but possible) would be a larger version of the anti-government sentiment seen in the recent protest in Nevada. Few things upset people who consider themselves True Patriots than taxes. For groups that have a very strong anti-government feeling, even our troops would be evil. I mean, they DID VOLUNTEER to fight for the tyrannical Government. They could be considered neither brave patriotic, just paid minions of the Government willingly squandering of our nation's resources.
This would add a whole new perspective to a statement made by one of our own (about the Nevada incident, not the above):
"Patriots rising up against tyranny prevail! I hope it's a sign of more to come. This is far from over. "
At the risk of being cynical, it would not surprise me that some of the anti-government protesters at the Bundy Ranch would fall into the above category. Certainly some organized militias would. They would consider themselves Patriots for avoiding military service.
Damn. I scared myself so much that I need to sneak into my kid's room, steal her night-light and put it beside MY bed.
