CZ527 precision gunsmith recommendations?

I too am ready for a rebarrel to 6.5 Grendel on my CZ527 Carbine in 7.62X39. The barrel blank I have chosen is a light weight contour 1/9 twist fluted Kreiger. I have been following this thread closely and will give Short Action Customs a call.

Mark used fluted, threaded, and melonited Krieger 5R 1-8.5" barrels on the ARs he made for us. We are very happy with those.

Agreed. The photos make the stock look so svelte, but I used the term "boat anchor" advisedly. Immediately after weighing the doggone thing, I sent email to Manners and McMillan to see if there were any recent developments for lightweight CZ527 stocks.

The good/bad news is that when I ordered the stock from CZ, the salesman enthused that CZ was planning a factory Grendel.... "but it will still be a couple of years."

"A couple of years" for the first factory bolt action Grendle; thats great news! Probably get it about the first time we get Wolf steel ammo. Now, somewhere on this forum there is a thread about a company in Oregon or Washington that makes light synthetic stocks, I'll try and find it.

Oregunsmithing. Some one hand a Grendel built by him. Seems like the stock was like 18 oz. I have never seen one myself.

I like this one, because the adjustable cheekpiece mitigates the high ring problem, but suspect it won't be their lightest stock (adding an adjustable cheekpiece to a McMillan adds about 1# and that forearm looks beefy):

Yes, this guy builds what everyone is looking for. Heavy tactical rifles and light hunters. I have no idea about how accurate.

Wayne York at Oregunsmithing was very helpful. Apparently they have done numerous CZ527 Carbine 6.5 Grendel conversions with "one hole" results. They use Benchmark reverse contour 5R barrels (about $600), usually mounted in their ~1 pound Classic C stock (about $600):



I also talked to Tom Manners who has done a couple of CZ527 conversions (6mm PPC, .17-204) for himself. He used (and recommends) their 1½ pound "Superlight" (about $500 not including the cost of custom inletting) or EH4 compact stocks:

I like. It looks better then my current cz Grendel. But I've come full circle. The barrel on my cz grendel still shoots about 3/4". It used to shoot like 1/4' but hay, its a hunting rifle. Maybe I'll just get it restocked and metal coated. Maybe I'll wait till I start missing animals.

Perhaps you have already mentioned and I missed it. What barrel did you select?

Right now my CZ has a heavy sporter contour 18" Walther barrel on it. When new it shot 1/4 inch groups. Now with about 4k rounds down the tube I'm shooting 3/4 inch groups. Since it is a hunting rifle I am happy with anything up to 1 1/2 groups. So no real need to rebarrel soon. Still and all; I miss those tiny groups so I'll see how much money is left over after my daughter starts college next year.

Just so you know, I emailed Oregunsmithing asking if they worked with converting the minimauser/mini mk x action to grendel- and how long it should take. I got a very nice and promt reply. He said he had worked with the CZ 527 and it took maybe 5 months. He urged me to call and talk about the mini mk x. Hmm.. I dont know if I want to change out my CZ barrel till it goes over 1 inch groups. But I do want a new rifle this year.

After much consideration and despite our love of the Horus "Christmas tree" reticles, I mounted a Vortex PST 4-16x50 mrad (with the factory CZ rings and CZ's new style bolt). EuroOptic gave me a great price on a pristine "demo."

Mark Gordon at SAC has another customer interested in the same conversion, so he is seeing what Manners can do. It would sure be nice to have an adjustable cheekpiece.

Meanwhile we've been running the 7.62x39 with 25.5 gn of H4198 behind Lapua 123 gn FMJ Spitzers—decent, but definitely not yet the planned lightweight long range rifle.

Some further new on the CZ 527. I mounted a Minox 2-10 by 50 with a 30 mm scope tube tonight. I used the Millet medium 30mm rings and it all fits! Maybe it fits better then the same scope with a 1 inch tube. The factory bolt handle is close and you gotta palm it,not finger it; but thats how your supposed to do it anyway. I think the 4 inches eye relief do help with mounting.
