Under gassed?

Thanks guys. I ordered a series of wire gauge bits. I can gradually increase the port size and feel much better about it. Graduations of .096, .098, .0995, ...... I'll have to find the sweet spot.

An old guy at work kept saying I need a #21 and #25 drill bit. I kept saying you mean an 1/8" or a 5/32"? He said no the #'s. I have never heard of them and looked on line and low and behold, there they were...

I was at the machine shop since then to have my Comp milled open for my Grendel. He put the comp in the lathe and opened his HUGE drill box. There they were tinny tiny to big with #'s from 10 to something. He measured my comp I took him from my other barrel, and pulled out a bit, not sure what number, and test fit it to my comp, perfect fit. He put it in the chuck and turned on the lathe. Also amazing, the bit was fixed and he spun the comp in the lathe chuck And moved the fixed bit to the spinning comp. Worked great.

Amazing how I'm learning so much from what I thought was just shooting. I never imagined all of the new things I'm learning that are used in firearms building and techniques...

The gas port location on the AR15 is usually positioned to allow a handguard cap to be sandwiched between the shoulder on the barrel profile, and the Front Sight Base for a traditional AR15 configuration.

Since so many guns are being built as free-floaters with lo-pro gas blocks, and a new generation of shooters is jumping into the AR15 build process, this is easily over-looked, while being a well-known consideration for those of us who have been messing with them for decades. I hope you didn't open your port unnecessarily, because larger ports erode faster.
