Hello everyone,
I just ordered a AA 16" Grendel and was wondering what sights would work well? I was looking at the Burris XTR-14 1X-4X-24mm, or maybe the eotech with the 3X magnifier. I dont think the eotech would do the Grendel any good as far as distance though? Any recommendations?

I also have a 16" Grendel and currently have a 1-4 GRSC scope on it. For the Grendel a 1-4x is a little light on the scope department, especially if you want to shoot for accuracy or distance. For a simple, practical scope that favors more on light weight and 100-300m utility, the 1-4x optics are great. If most of your shooting will be at a flat range where you really want to wring out the most accuracy and distance from the Grendel platform, I recommend more magnification like 8-10x on the top end, with a fine cross hair in the center.
600-700m will be the maximum effective range of a 16" Grendel on man-size targets, and I would confidently hunt with it out to 400 with the right load and optic. My plans are to get another Vortex 2.5-10x44 Viper PST for the 16" Grendel and use the 1-4x GRSC on one of my 5.56 AR's.
Your optics selection will be totally-driven by what you intend to use your carbine for. Identify that, and then decisions will fall into place very quickly.

I've got a AA16" and put a Leupold 2.5-8x on top for mid-range use. When working up loads the 8x is great at 100-200yds. And for deer hunting I can drop down to 2.5x for close in shots. It also didn't add a lot of weight, I wanted a light weight deer rifle. If I was shooting 300yds or more I'd go for more top end magnification. All depends on your intended use.
Truthfully, this is my first rifle. The reason I like the Grendel is so I can try and make some long distance shots. 600 -700 m sounds like a challenge. I want to keep the look of a tactical rifle, but I also want a nice scope. So, with that piece of info, what would you recommend?

What about this Leupold? Looks like it has some nice features.
I bought one of those back in 2003 for an AR-10. There is much better glass available for less money than that, or comparable cash. It's going to take something truly earth-shattering to get me to buy Leupold ever again. If you are in that spending range, NightForce blows away Leupold all day long.
The NF 2.5-10x32 scopes are a great fit for the 16" Grendels. You could also save a ton of cash and get the Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44. Keep in mind that a 16" Grendel is more like a 400-500m set-up, especially when the wind kicks in. I wouldn't go too crazy on optics for a 16" Grendel, although you will be able to hit man-size silhouettes at further distances if there is little to no wind and constant conditions.
With your first rifle, I would buy a more economical optic and get an idea of how optics play into distance-shooting, what features you will need, and things that work with you. Get matching turrets to the reticle (Mil/Mil or MOA/MOA), a reliable erector mechanism that returns to zero and tracks accurately, and good glass. You still haven't stated whether you will be hunting or just target-shooting with this...competing...and so forth??? The 2.5-10x44 will facilitate hunting and target-shooting, while not looking like a semi trailer loaded with an Atlas 5 rocket.
Very good points. I like the Viper and I am going to take a serious look at it. I will also check out the Night Force line. I dont really hunt, but I like the idea of shooting long distance targets. I appreciate all your help and look forward to hanging out on this site.
I only see the 2.5-10X 36 in the Night Force scope. Is that he one you are recommending?
I meant the NF 2.5-10x32, while the Vortex Viper PST is a 2.5-10x44.

I love Nightforce scopes, but in this situation, I would go Viper PST and never look back. I had the chance to look through one recently, and was very impressed. I liked it at least as much as my Nikon Tactical 2.5x10 and that has been my favorite scope in that range for 5 years.
For the price difference between it and the Nightforce, and with it on a 16" barrel, I'd get the Viper PST. (I have two Nightforces and no Vipers, BTW!)
