as seen on Fox After Zimmerman Trail DOJ looks to repeal Stand your ground laws
#1
I saw at the end of the footage after Zimmerman was acquitted that the civil suits will be filed to repeal the stand your ground laws nation wide.

I haven't yet seen any official writings news on the interaweb.

Let them file! They wont be overturned. It will be a huge waste of their money, while stand your ground will have to be defended by state AG's, and though it will be tax dollars spent defending it, half that money will be theirs! So they pay both sides, or 75%+ of the total.

Be careful guys with this thread I think Stand Your Ground qualifies as 2A, but stay on the topic, don't get off topic and into race baiting.

I think your post was entirely appropriate at this point. I just want 2A topics to stay on track.

Looking forward to constructive posts!

I think the biggest problem you have with this particular case is the shootee was painted by the media as an unarmed teenager. This is what the news media has seemed to focus on. An adult killing a child. While that is true, it is only part of the story.

What may have been the real issue for the jury? The shootee was a 6'2', the shooter 5'8'. That is a fairly significant size difference. If I was facing someone 6" taller than me, I might fear for my life/safety depending on situation. As I understand the Florida statue (not a lawyer or resident of Florida BTW), Zimmerman was in a place he was legally authorized to be, carrying in a lawful manner, so he met the requirements under the law if he felt threatened. In the dark, with an unknown person who was obviously larger than him, how could Zimmerman know he was not dealing with an adult? How could he know he was not dealing with someone who was an expert in close combat?

I am also sure that we (as in those of us not on the jury/in the courtroom) have received only a small percentage of the facts in the case. Those few facts we have received have been edited/presented in a manner to make a story. The jury received all of the facts, and made their decision based on those facts. There was at the very least 'reasonable doubt'.

Hope I didn't get off track.

Yeah a dead innocent person killed by some teenage thug who wont be charged as an adult although they murder somebody is always preferable to an armed victim who decides to protect theirselves. NOT!

The "stand your ground" law wasn't even invoked as a defense in the Zimmerman case…it was self-defense pure and simple. Fortunately, the state of FL has a justifiable force civil immunity law on the books. This is why Zimmerman's lawyers are so confident that any civil lawsuit will be dismissed.

Title XLVI
CRIMES

Chapter 776
JUSTIFIABLE USE OF FORCE

View Entire Chapter
776.032 Immunity from criminal prosecution and civil action for justifiable use of force.—
(1) A person who uses force as permitted in s. 776.012, s. 776.013, or s. 776.031 is justified in using such force and is immune from criminal prosecution and civil action for the use of such force, unless the person against whom force was used is a law enforcement officer, as defined in s. 943.10(14), who was acting in the performance of his or her official duties and the officer identified himself or herself in accordance with any applicable law or the person using force knew or reasonably should have known that the person was a law enforcement officer. As used in this subsection, the term “criminal prosecution” includes arresting, detaining in custody, and charging or prosecuting the defendant.
(2) A law enforcement agency may use standard procedures for investigating the use of force as described in subsection (1), but the agency may not arrest the person for using force unless it determines that there is probable cause that the force that was used was unlawful.
(3) The court shall award reasonable attorney’s fees, court costs, compensation for loss of income, and all expenses incurred by the defendant in defense of any civil action brought by a plaintiff if the court finds that the defendant is immune from prosecution as provided in subsection (1).

The verdict has elicited passionate responses from around the country. President Obama reacted to the verdict with a call for "compassion and understanding in our own communities." Describing Martin's death as a "tragedy," he stated, "we should ask ourselves if we're doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis."

This President is pathetic.
The gun violence wouldn't have occured if it wasn't for the violent actions of Trayvon Martin that initiated the confrontation. Why doesn't the news or Administration address the Chicago murders of teens. The libs have had their way in Chicago concerning gun crime yet it has the highest murder rate.

The case is being used as a call for more gun control. Yet most of the murders of young black men come at the hands of other black men. Would gun control solve that? I doubt that it would.

As for stand your ground, does that mean that cops have to back off as well? Or are they the only ones allowed to stand up to thugs and bullies?

Kikn is correct; the original was sprite, jolly rancher hard candy and codeine (Robitussin DM if codeine unavailable since codeine is prescription only).

Skittles, Arizona Watermelon Juice, and Robitussin DM results in a dangerous beverage, an alternative to the original Purple Lean, which gives a high similar to pot or pcp (depending upon amount consumed). It can be personality altering, leading to paranoia and aggressiveness. According to evidence gleaned from young Mr. Martin's cell phone, he had been an abuser for over a year.

Excuse the deviation from 2A, but I thought it a rather important public safety issue for parents (maybe I'm naive, but I just learned of it this weekend).

I think sizzurp is more what the kids call it these days instead of purple drank though...since this is a matter of education for parents. : )

Original investigator ruled out "Stand your ground"…where are you going to retreat to when knocked to the ground?

Quote:The initial decision not to arrest Zimmerman, former Sanford, Florida, Police Chief Bill Lee said last week (as paraphrased by CNN), "had nothing to do with Florida's controversial 'Stand Your Ground' law" because "from an investigative standpoint, it was purely a matter of self-defense."

That is absolutely correct. I knew from the beginning it was nothing more than a self defense issue.

For some people that don't get it. I put it to them this way.

If George Zimmerman is telling the absolute 100% truth in the way things went down. Do you or do you not believe he had the right to defend himself.

(And quite frankly if you can't agree with that above there is little hope for you as being an objective and reasonable person)

And as much as this is a 2nd amendment issue its also an issue of self defense and the use of a weapon in this case a gun and what does that mean to the 2nd amendment of the US constitution. If they take away the right to defend yourself by eliminating the ability to use a firearm when your life is in danger. Should we revert back to rocks and large sticks? (Scratch that carrying a large stick is against the law....)

With respect, LR, it has quite a bit to do with it. The administration and the rest of the rabble-rousers are choosing to ignore the violent behavior which was likely caused by said homemade drink in order to claim that the shooting was unjustified. Which turns the case from self defense against a drug abusing thug into the murder of an unarmed child.

Although I believe that you are correct in your statement; and it was more than likely a main contributing factor in the assault of George Zimmerman. It does not contribute to the 2nd amendment issue that this thread was started for.
