it. America's might is something to behold. Except when it isn't.
More than 30,000 people in the United States are killed every year by
someone brandishing a gun. It is a staggering number, no matter what you
believe about the right to bear arms ... And yet America simply cannot
find a way to stop it. How strong is that?

Announcing that he would vote for a renewal of the ban on assault
weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines ... Senate Majority
Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) ... told a story about a conversation he had
recently had with a friend in Nevada:

He asked me if the police have assault weapons. He asked me if
United States military personnel have assault weapons. I said, "Yes, of
course they do." And he said, and I quote, "If they have them, I want
them." I thought about what this statement means. It means that there
should be no limits on the kinds of weapons private citizens are allowed
to own. I asked myself whether I believe that to be true. The police
have riot gear and tear gas and battering rams. Should civilians have
those, too? The military has rockets and machine guns and tanks and
fighter jets. Should civilians have those, too? I decided the answer is
no. In a civil society, where we have to balance individual rights with
public safety, there should be limits on the kind of destructive weapons
people are allowed to own ... The desire to arm ourselves against the
young men and women who willingly risk their lives to defend our
freedoms overseas is not a reason to oppose an assault weapons ban. The
wish to arm ourselves against the police who keep our streets safe is
not a reason to oppose an assault weapons ban ... The United States
military is not out to get us. Federal law enforcement and local police
departments are not out to get us. These conspiracy theories are
dangerous and they should be put to rest ... I will vote for the ban
because maintaining law and order is more important than satisfying
conspiracy theorists who believe in black helicopters and false flags.
And I will vote for the ban because saving the lives of young police
officers and innocent civilians is more important than preventing
imagined tyranny.

Seemingly, for the first time in the United States, we witnessed
paramilitary-garbed law enforcement personnel forcing residents out of
their homes at gunpoint. In some cases, the language used by law
enforcement was menacing.

Because of the hysteria that comes after any terror event, the American
people wanted the perpetrators caught and, in doing so, appeared to have
allowed their rights against unlawful search and seizure to not be
suspended, but removed ... These past events in Watertown have set a
precedent ... If the government can order us to stay in our homes, it
looks like it can throw us out of them any time it wants ... at the
point of a gun.

Patriotic citizens from coast to coast rallied around our government
after witnessing the courageous actions of first responders and law
enforcement in Boston. The notion that some would see this instead as an
opportunity to divide us -- to foment a civil war -- is deeply
disturbing. Haven't we been visited by enough violence in recent months?
The irony also shouldn't be lost on us that the real "well regulated
Militia," the National Guard [untrue. Citation* below], was deployed to
Boston during the tragedy to protect Americans citizens and keep the peace.

The government's fidelity to the Constitution is never more tested than
in a time of crisis. The urge to do something – or to appear to be doing
something – is nearly irresistible to those whom we have employed to
protect our freedom and to keep us safe. Regrettably, with each passing
violent crisis – Waco, Oklahoma City, Columbine, 9/11, Newtown and now
the Boston Marathon – our personal freedoms continue to slip away, and
the government itself remains the chief engine of that slippage.

The American people made a pact with the devil in the weeks and months
following 9/11 when they bought the Bush-era argument that by
surrendering liberty they could buy safety. But that type of pact has
never enhanced either liberty or safety, and its fruits are always bitter.

out swinging against the four Senate Democrats who voted last week
against a measure that would have expanded background checks on gun
purchases. They are looking to hold the Democrats accountable for what
they see as a betrayal on a key wedge issue for progressives. And
the only way that many in this camp think it will change is if there are
real electoral consequences. To that end, Progressive Change Campaign
Committee has launched a six-figure ad buy against each of the four
Democrats who voted against background checks – Mark Pryor of Arkansas,

anti-trafficking bill, is the subject of talks between Senator Kirsten
E. Gillibrand, Democrat of New York, and two Republican senators who
voted no on the background check bill. The Republicans, Senators Kelly

ways they might support the bill, which would criminalize the shipping
or transfer of guns to someone who is barred from possessing a

Connecticut's two U.S. senators are expected to discuss plans to push

The Ongoing DHS Ammo Controversy: Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz said
Thursday that the Department of Homeland Security is using roughly 1,000
rounds of ammunition more per person than the U.S. Army, as he and other
lawmakers sharply questioned DHS officials on their "massive" bullet
buys. "It is entirely ... inexplicable why the Department of Homeland
Security needs so much ammunition," Chaffetz, R-Utah, said at a
hearing. The hearing itself was unusual, as questions about the
department's ammunition purchases until recently had bubbled largely
under the radar – on blogs and in the occasional news article. But as
the Department of Homeland Security found itself publicly defending the
purchases, lawmakers gradually showed more interest in the
issue. Democratic Rep. John Tierney, D-Mass., at the opening of the
hearing, ridiculed the concerns as "conspiracy theories" which have "no
place" in the committee room. But Republicans said the purchases raise
"serious" questions about waste and accountability... (A couple of years
ago, I took a young neighbor out for an introduction to the operation of

The Department of Homeland Security’s chief procurement officer
testified at a House hearing Thursday that the agency’s bullet [sic]
stockpile is almost 250 million, and the procurement of ammunition has
“remained constant” in relation to the number of employees that carry
and use firearms.“As of April 15, 2013, this amounted to DHS having
approximately 246,451,611 rounds in inventory,” Nick Nayak said in

One More Convert: The View panel never shy away from the hot topics of
the day. But the debate on gun control become more than just a
discussion when Sherri Shepherd announced she wanted to arm herself on
Thursday. The 46 year-old announced that she wanted to buy a gun after
her burglar alarm went off at 1am that morning saying an intruder was
inside. The alarm and it's warning terrified Shepherd, her husband Lamar
Sally and their son Jeffery, despite the police arrived seven minutes
later to reassure the family it was simply a false alarm. Nonetheless,
the devout Christian who has taken a more conservative stance on a
number of recent hot-button political issues to make The View's
roundtable, declared they were buying a gun. 'I’m trying to calm Jeffrey
down and all I had was this wicker basket,' Sherri said. 'I have
nothing, a bat, nothing. We’re going to get a gun.' While Barbara
Walters tried to talk Shepherd out of the idea, fill-in co-host, country
music singer and licensed gun holder Gretchen Wilson supported the
former stand-up comedian, claiming she carried a .38 caliber pistol in
her purse and had a .45 caliber pistol beside her bed. Meanwhile, Whoopi
Goldberg encouraged Shepherd to go out and buy a bat... (Shepherd
probably has enough clout to navigate NYC's cumbersome permit system
more quickly than a common citizen. I hope that she does not follow
Uncle Joe Biden's advice to buy a double-barrel 12-gauge shotgun and
does not settle for the training that comes in the box with the gun.)

NSSF on GE Capital's Decision: ...Such is the case with the Wednesday
Wall Street Journal story that reported that GE Capital, the huge
financial services business of General Electric, had decided it will no
longer provide consumer financing for firearms purchasing. Now, keep in
mind, as the story itself said, that GE Capital had stopped taking on
new customers in this space in 2008 and was only servicing existing
ones, that “the company’s exit has little overall impact in a U.S. gun
market, where sales last year totaled $11.7 billion (and in which) …
financing remains a marginal activity” and that their involvement in
this market is “an ‘insignificant and immaterial’ part of GE Capital’s
business.” ...We believe in free markets. We know that EBay’s decision
not to sell firearms gave rise to the opportunity that GunBroker.com and
several others have seized. Other lenders, some local or regionally
based, perhaps another national specialized niche lender, will step
forward to take GE Capital’s place, if there is sufficient market
opportunity. The story itself talked about two such lenders. Retailers
themselves have options starting with the tried and true lay-away

Tucson Gun Buyback Debated: Gun activist Ken Rineer says Tucson's [AZ]
January 8th gun buy back was a waste of taxpayer money. He says the 45
officers who worked at the event and who took the guns to be destroyed,
cost the taxpayers nearly $10,000. "We used over 40 officers to take
care of a 'turn-in' that realized no benefit," he says. He was able to
get a copy of the Tucson Police Department's Special Operation's Plan
for the Ward 6 Gun Buy Back. The plan outlines the purpose, mission and
areas of operations. It also assigns officers to various tasks and
concludes with a wrap up of the event. At the end, it estimates the cost
at $9,910. Rineer uses that figure to tally the taxpayer cost. "I would
prefer law enforcement do law enforcement," he says. "Not baby sitting a
bunch of people standing in line to turn in a firearm." Rineer is
President of Gun Owners of Arizona, a gun rights organization...

Constitutional Carry for Arkansas: Arkansas Carry is pleased to announce
that in July, 2013, Arkansas will become the fifth state in the United
States to enact “Constitutional Carry” into law. Act 746 of the 2013
General Assembly was signed into law by Governor Mike Beebe on April
4th, 2013, after receiving only one “nay” vote from the legislature...
This technical change decriminalizes the carry of handguns for
self-defense purposes, and puts the burden upon a prosecutor to prove
criminal intent of a person carrying a handgun. Also, there are no
specifications whether a legally carried handgun should be carried
openly or concealed; thus it is considered Constitutional Carry by
Arkansas Carry and the gun owners of the state. Act 746 is further
supported by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and by
Article II, § 5 of the Arkansas Constitution (right to bear arms)...
(It's worth noting that, while Wyoming also has constitutional carry, it
is limited to residents of the state; permits are still required for
visitors who choose to carry discreetly.)

Life in California: Now that the man who tried to kill him is off to
prison, Greenbrae resident Jay Leone wants his guns and valuables back.
But it could take anywhere from a couple of months to several years.
Leone's gun collection, bullets, watches and jewelry are being kept in
evidence while the convicted attacker, Samuel Cutrufelli, contemplates
an appeal. Cutrufelli, who received a life sentence last week, has 60
days to file a notice of appeal, and the appeal itself could take
years... The crime occurred Jan. 3, 2012, at Leone's home on Via La
Cumbre. Authorities said Cutrufelli, a methamphetamine user with an
assault record, broke into Leone's home, put a gun to his head, tied his
wrists, blindfolded him, and rummaged through his bedroom for valuables.
Leone, a gun collector and World War II veteran, testified that he
wriggled his hands free, convinced the burglar to let him use the
bathroom, and retrieved one of his five guns from the bathroom. In the
ensuing gunfight, Leone was shot once in the face and Cutrufelli was
shot several times in the body... (Some list members may recall that
Cutrufelli's attorney also filed a suit – subsequently dropped – against
Leone, for Cuturfelli's injuries.)

SAF Tackles Maryland Ordinances: gun owners’ rights group has threatened
to sue 35 Maryland counties or municipalities unless they repeal
regulations that the group says violate state gun laws. The Second
Amendment Foundation of Bellevue, Wash., said Thursday that Maryland is
the third state targeted in its campaign to eliminate more-restrictive
local laws in states where local governments have little or no authority
to regulate firearms. The group has run similar projects in its home
state and Virginia, said Alan M. Gottlieb, the group’s founder and
executive vice president. He said Oregon is next, and the group aims to
eventually hit as many as 42 states that have laws pre-empting the

Knee-Jerk in Oregon: Multnomah County commissioners voted unanimously
Thursday to tighten local gun regulations. State law largely pre-empts
local jurisdictions from crafting gun measures, so the ordinance
approved Thursday makes minor tweaks to existing laws, The Oregonian
reported. Mostly, it adopts language the city of Portland approved in
2010. The ordinance makes it illegal to fire a gun within the county. It
also bans possession of a loaded firearm in public, makes failing to
report the theft of a gun a crime and makes it illegal to allow a child
to possess a gun without the owner's permission. Among the exemptions
are people with concealed handgun licenses, hunters, people defending
themselves, retired or off-duty law enforcement officers, and those on
their own property as long as they aren't endangering others. Objections
came from a butcher and a hiker...

Shooting with AR-15 Appears Justifiable: The fatal shooting of a home
intruder last Friday in Cheltenham [PA] appears to have been
justifiable, according to Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri
Ferman. The 20-year-old Lynnewood Gardens apartment resident, who used
an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle to shoot the intruder, was in fear of his
life and the lives of others in the apartment, said Ferman. “You have a
man who defended himself inside his home, as the law would generally
permit, and exercised extreme restraint by firing only one shot in
shooting someone who was unlawfully in his home,” said Ferman. Ferman
said Wednesday she was not yet prepared to issue an “official” ruling
because the investigation is ongoing and authorities are waiting for the
toxicology reports on the person who was killed...

Oops, Wrong Pharmacy: The police said a Manchester [NH] pharmacy clerk
got into a tense exchange with a female robbery suspect, with both
drawing guns and the woman pointing hers at an elderly customer before
another patron saw it was a pellet gun and tackled her. The police
identified the woman as 30-year-old Nicole Chase of Manchester. They
said the incident happened Wednesday morning, when a woman handed the
clerk at Ken’s Pharmacy in Manchester a note demanding Percocet. She
said she had a gun. The clerk, who didn’t see a gun, challenged her,
saying he had one and would call the police. The clerk proceeded to
retrieve a gun from behind the counter, but quickly returned it when the
woman produced a gun and pointed it at the customer. She told the clerk
she would shoot the customer if her demands weren’t met. The clerk, who
did not want to further escalate the situation, handed over the pills to
the woman. At the same time, the police said, another customer standing
near the suspect recognized the weapon was a pellet gun. He tackled her
as she tried to flee... (All's well that ends well but it sounds as
thought the clerk needs some training in the laws and tactics
surrounding the use of deadly force.)

That fact that the Boston Bombing somehow rekindles a gun control debate is ridiculous. Boston has some of the strictest gun laws, yet these guys obtained pistols. They are breaking the law to kill people so why do they car about the lesser gun laws.

I live in Sandy Hook, CT. My family and close friends weren't harmed on December 14. That day impacted 26 families with an indescribable, staggering pain and anguish. For most of Sandy Hook, it merely affected us with an inescapable intensity of sadness and grief.

Gun control has long been a focus of many in this country. Though I'm not knowledgeable of all the nuances of the Second Amendment, based on the Founding Fathers' circumstances, it had far more to do with enabling the citizenry to protect themselves against tyrannical government than against local psychopaths. It is about providing a balanced firepower so when King George's successor came knocking on your door, you could fight back. Government today is no less inclined to abuse its authority than it was then. Based on the absurd and ongoing power grab that is present day Washington, it's as threatening as ever.

That so many of you view the NRA with its resistance to further restrictions on firearms as intransigent lunatics has far more to do with how you conduct yourselves in office than it does with the NRA's actions.

You in public office are fundamentally dishonest people. You lead lives of deception at every turn, structuring your lives as comfortably as you can while governing with an indifference and arrogance that is absolutely maddening.
When the country is reeling from financial disaster, you waste a trillion dollars on a health care bill we can't afford and you've never read. You claim it's critical because health care costs are killing this country... no they're not, you are! You are killing this country. You endorse the ongoing slaughter of millions of unborn children and whine when terrorists are water boarded.
You can't lecture us right in Newtown High School about not doing enough to keep our children safe, while simultaneously slaughtering the unborn. You fabricate the intense, media laden drama of the fiscal cliff and lack the courage to do anything about truly reforming the obscene gluttony of government. You know you'll be out of office before the bill comes due! You don't care and have no integrity nor honor.

You lie whenever and wherever you need to move forth your agenda. Were you able, you would purge the US of every last gun in the country, if you could.
So please forgive Wayne LaPierre and those of us who don't trust you as far as we can spit. You're a dishonest lot, motivated by a distorted worldview. If mass murder prevention were truly your goal, you would welcome armed security wherever needed. It is outrageous that we protect our money with far more firepower than we protect our children.

I have never owned a gun, nor wanted to as intensely as right now. You'll stop restricting guns when only you have them.

The Dems keep weakening the bill in an attempt to pass 'something'. I assume their initial thoughts are so they can say they did it, and also because they know getting a full AWB will be almost impossible unless they get the house in 2014 so they'll take baby-steps until then.

Write your Senators! And, if they're coming up for election next year write them, email them, and call them.

I'm pretty much screwed for now. I have Manchin and Rockefeller.... This state couldn't get more stupid representation (actually evil, I believe).

Shelley Capito might get Rockefeller's spot when he leaves, and Manchin has obviously cut some kind of dirty deal. Maybe we can put at least an "R" in his seat. The state seems to be trending red, maybe we can do it next time.

I do send them the GOA letters though. Just out of spite.LOL
