Only selling them completed is illegal, by providing you an unfinished part and then you finishing it yourself, you built the lower. According to Ares manufacturing's website that is where the loophole is, because it "supposedly" is not illegal to manufacture your own lower. I must say I think it is walking a fine line especially here in Kalifonistan even though that's where they are made.

Its not a fine line its 100% legal according to the ATF. The ATF inspects the 80% lower retailers to ensure its not considered a firearm. You finish it either at home or use a CNC machine rented of course at a machine shop and you can own. You can make 3 home firearms a year but can never give them away or change ownership. Its a federal law dating back to 1968.

Looks nice but a little expansive imo.

I would save the $10 and buy the non-anodized since you have to anodize the lower after you finish the milling anyway.

I agree. I would order it in the white, and make sure the magwell has a good funnel to it, do some custom engravings, then Type III anodize.

I'm going to probably do a layer of black duracoat on my upper, lower and barrel so the colors match anyways. So no worries there.

Xcountryrider, I have been doing some experimentation with coatings and have not been crazy about duracoat. Alumahyde from Brownells is much worse. I have heard good things about cerekote and am going to try that next.

Its kind of spendy but it already has fire and save engraved which would cost more latter to get done. Its the only 80% I've seen with that already done. Its also a "billet" lower meaning it was milled from a solid brick not from a factory forge like the majority of lowers on the market. You can get the finished lower from bravo4tactical for 250 and have it shipped to an FFL if you don't want the 80%.
