To DC Barry, 2 senators, and congressman:

My view of my rifle and hi-cap mags, the 2nd Amendment, and some politicians’ basic knowledge of firing a rifle:
2nd Amendment:
As ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State:
“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
Well I can read a map and have an understanding of where most of the terrorist and drug cartel attack happen now days. I also understand that me, my house, or where I work are not of any prime interest to them today.
That said I also know the 2nd Amendment was written to allow me to protect myself from inside governments gone astray as much outside forces that may enter this country someday along with common criminals. Odds are I will never have to fire a shot to protect myself from a religious fanatic, an organized criminal gang, or a representative of tyrannical force that may come to power in this nation, I plan to keep the right and ability to do so in an effective manner.
While something like a 38 revolver is adequate for some situations it is not a defense or protection in every possibility that however unlikely could arise. One of the principals we have as a nation long held some enemies are only held at bay or defeated by is the overwhelming strength of our arsenal. Where 6 shots fail, many may prevail.
So whether it’s burglars, jihadists, or agents I want to convince them that I was not their best choice to try to rob, convert, or make subject to their unconstitutional rule.
The 2nd Amendment uses the phrase “shall not be infringed” the term “infringed” is very important to this because it means “to encroach upon in a way that violates law or the rights of another.” Encroachment can be done in small incremental steps there by eroding the rights a little at a time this is the approach being taken now. Limiting the type and/or the capacity of a weapon is an encroachment of its usefulness and thus an infringement of my 2nd Amendment Right. One would think that items enshrined in the “Bill of Rights” would be a no brainer not to be violated by our elected officials, but it seems their personal agendas take priority over the Constitution they swore to upheld and defend.
With regards to at least one senator’s belief that semi auto rifles are supposed to be fired from the hip. I think she’s been watching way too many old episodes of “The Rifleman” and doesn’t know the differences between real life and TV. Plus has no working knowledge of a lever action rifle firing blanks compared to the issue being discussed.

To the state reps:
In as much that some states have done things like approved pot and marriage between who ever feels like it would you please look at having Florida pass a law in support of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution? At this point in time I’m not sure we can rely on the people in Washington DC to uphold and defend the Constitution as they swore to do. Shouldn’t be necessary but some peoples agendas seem to have priority over the Bill of Rights.

I would recommend that anyone contacting their elected representatives include a solution to the problem in addition to telling them you disagree with proposed legislation.

The solution should be simple and easy to fund.

For example, my solution( feel free to use it if you want) for protecting our children( their stated goal) is to hire an armed guard for each school in the United States.

At first this sounds expensive and they would argue there is no money to fund this plan but my solution is this:

There are a little under 100,000 schools in the U.S. so I will round the number to 100,000 to make the math simpler and cleaner.

If we hire one armed guard for each school, preferrably ex-military or law enforcement, at $40,000.00 each, this would cost $4,000,000,000.00 ( 4 Billion dollars)

The federal budget for the Department of Education in Washington D.C. is approx. $70,000,000,000.00 ( 70 Billion dollars) per year and going up.

This is the people who are constantly saying all they do is care about kids whenever a proposal is made to cut their budget.

So we cut their budget by the needed $4,000,000,000.00 to fund the armed guards and we actually get something positive from this money instead of it being wasted as it is now.

It's a simple and funded solution and it gets their stated goal, remember they only care about our children, solved.
It also makes it hard for them to argue against the solution.

Please keep contacting your representatives and local sheriffs.

Here's my latest stab at letters to my reps. I have written more in the last few weeks than I have in the previous several years, but as the OP said, it should be more often.

Dear __________,

I am writing today regarding HB 1588. I am requesting that you vote 'AGAINST' it.

HB 1588 will not limit criminal access to guns. Current law already prohibits delivery of a firearm to anybody they have reasonable cause to believe are ineligible to possess them. Criminals break the law anyway, and can sell without paperwork, completely circumventing the law. Even the current background check system is flawed, because those who do not pass the check are usually not investigated further, and the database often does not contain current information.

There is no recent shooting that this law would have prevented the perpetrator from obtaining a gun - including the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, and the most recent by former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner.
