Is there enough room at the muzzle end to cut the 9/16 thread off and recrown//thread 5/8-24?

You can use pretty much any thread diameter/pitch that is common on AR's for the Grendel, to include 1/2x28. I wouldn't use the 1/2x28, but Colt did on the 9mm SMG's, and 9mm is much larger than 6.5mm...
It's beneficial for accuracy to have as much mass at the muzzle, so the 5/8x24 seems like the best option to me following that guideline if you need a muzzle device. I don't know why the 9/16 was ever chosen for this caliber, since there are plenty of AR10 5/8x24 muzzle devices and cans threaded for 5/8x24 available.

You will most definitely be cutting it close but it should be doable. That is a midwest industries hand guard and let me tell you something. I have ran every forearm out there. Not one of them holds a candle to this one. It's so so freaking light it angers me that I just put a troy trx on my 5.56 set up. It's a very simplistic design but damn it's rock solid and just lightens up the whole entire feel of the rifle. Simply amazing. Quick story.....the first midwest rail I have....I screw it up and stripped the threads on the locking bolt on the bottom of it. So I called MI and explained what had happened and even mention that it was probably my own fault and they said. Don't worry we will 3 day air out one to you today....and they did. So anyways that said, I'm using these forever and am going to be selling my TRX and replacing it with an SS handguard. I love it that much. But anyways I'm on a rant at this point. I will be posting a lot more tomorrow night or the next day.

I had a bunch of them like this....not quite MOA, cuttin' it close. But keep in mind....BRAND NEW BARREL. It should only get better from here. Also I wasn't on a bench, I was on the ground with a sandbag up front and my bean sock stabilizing the rear.

It may not shoot the wings off a gnat, but that ain't too shabby. I don't know what you intend to do with yours, but that would make a fine hunting rifle.

If that group was shot at 100yds, it measures about .8 MOA, provided your quarter is 1" diameter. When I clicked on the picture, it sized to-scale on my screen. The quarter measured about 31/32", so if you measure center-to-center or edge-to-edge of your group, it is sub-MOA easily. For a button-rifled pipe and affordable pipe, those are great results.
Also, the TRX Extreme handguard from Troy is one of the lightest on the market right now. The 13"models weigh in at around 11 oz if I remember right. They also work with a standard barrel nut wrench, and install easily.

Remember to subtract the diameter of one bullet, or .264 from the measured groups size, since you are effectively measuring the width of 2 of them when you measure from side to side of the group. I get about the same as LRRPF52, and that's sub MOA!

I don't know....I thought a quarter was an inch and the holes in the paper were poking out around the quarter just a tiny little bit. Anyways, good enough for me. The TRX rail I was comparing it to is the TRX Battle Rail (quad rail) version that I have on my 5.56 upper, not the round one. Here is a picture of the rifle.
