Not sure whether to put this here or in the Bolt action area. Has any one re-barreled a Ruger American 7.62x39 to 6.5 Grendel? This is the one that uses the Mini 30 magazines.

The bolt face should be compatible and I’ve heard the 7.62x39 mini mags work great with the Grendel. So you’re good to go there!

Having said that, if you can find a new one in the Grendel, (probably easier said than done!) you might be better off just buying it, and selling the 7.62x39 off. Rather than purchasing a new barrel at $4-500! Penny wise, pound foolish! Maybe! I don’t think Ruger sells replacement barrels, at least they didn’t when I tried to buy one last year!

The bolt and mags are compatible, so, should be no problem.

Having said that, IMO , you’d be better off just buying another Ranch in Grendel. It’s basically the same cost or cheaper than getting a new aftermarket barrel. Then you’d have two complete rifles and/or sell the 7.62x39 off to offset the cost of swapping out.

6.5 Grendel is SAAMI spec, but don't think 7.62x39 is. One thing to check is the barrel thread, although you can make it anything you want if you have the proper machines.

Ruger doesn’t sell replacement barrels! That’s why it’s just cheaper to buy another gun!

I have not. What is it you're hoping to achieve? Rebarrel with a high end barrel?

If you're just wanting a Ruger American in Grendel, it would be a lot simpler to purchase one. My search of Gunbroker shows 142 for sale, so they're available.

Thanks for the answers, pre-fit barrels are available and I have the needed tools. I really enjoy my American. I tried feeding 6mm ARC and they seem to feed as well as the 7.62x39, largest mag I have is a 10 rd. Now to decide between 6.5 Grendel and another 6MM ARC. First world problems!

I do not know of any that have rebarreled the Ruger American to 6.5 Grendel but know several that have to 300 HAM'R. They said it was not bad at all to do.

Don't know for sure but have heard 100 or less difference, at first might be more though

The standard 20 inch barreled version is also to be released next year in 6.5 Grendel and 6mmARC as well
