Barrels remain the core of our business, but we're continually expanding to offer more and more parts.

If we have something cool and unique to bring to the table — like our barrel rifling specifications and profiles — we machine our innovations into steel.

If we don't need to re-invent the wheel, we don't. There are lots of great products out there we love as is, like many Aero Precision products — which we sell at some of the best prices in the industry.

Our product innovations include:

• Easy Engraving rifling in our barrels. This involves reduced lands height and width in a unique hybrid 5R profile for less engraving distortion of the bullet. A sort of built-in accuracy feature.

• Speaking of built-in accuracy features, our Grendel chambers are stock SAAMI except for having a .295 neck that helps center the bullet in the chamber when feeding. Our 6mmARC chambers are stock SAAMI except for a .110 freebore instead of a .090 so that we can seat bullets out to 2.280 and still use standard magazines.

• Our UltraSlim Alpha flash suppressor employs a classic — and classy looking — three-prongs which test after test after test proves is the most effective technology. The 2.25" overall length, .740 outside diameter allows easy installation and removal of a .750 gas block — even when pinned on a 14.5 barrel. There is no better flash suppressor at this size and weight, and for the money.

• Our UltraSlim Bravo flash suppressor employs the same three-prong design, but closes off the ends.

• Our UltraLite clamp-on gas block provides wrap-around security for both a tight seal AND massive friction to keep the block in place. And with the lightening slots, it's only 1.2 oz. Did I mention how good it looks?

• Something as simple as our cam pin uses tougher 4340 steel (a step up from standard 4140) because, while more costly to machine, the cam pin takes a beating every time you fire your gun. It's also black nitrided for a devilishly hard surface treatment and all-weather durability. Do we charge more for these essential improvements? No. Our prices are the ones to beat.

• Our new Toolcraft bolt carriers are slick-sided on the "head" and have 20 serrations on the "tail" for perfect use with the Forward Assist. But serrations on the head are absolutely useless. They only serve to collect grit and grime and shuck it into the action every time the bolt cycles. We don't do useless stuff just cuz everybody else does it or cuz that's how it's always been done or cuz there's only about five OEMs making the same commodity product for everyone. And that's NOT the way it's always been done; original M16s had no forward assist and no serrations. Our new slick-sided bolt carriers are the best of both worlds; they have forward assist serrations only where needed on the tail, and the clean, sleek look on the head that would make Eugene Stoner smile.

Whew! What else?

• Our UltraBolt restores more steel to the bolt body and extractor — all while working reliably with standard barrel extensions — to give us 6.5 Grendel and 6mmARC shooters the best bolt in the business. Has the same, or better, pricing than run-of-the-mill Grendel bolts and at half the price of boutique bolts that don't match our feature set. Why would anyone use anything else? Makes no sense. We got tons in stock!

Everything we're selling is improvements we've first demanded for ourselves. That's why we're passionate about this stuff.

• Oh, yeah, we've come up with an innovative gas block dimpling system for our set-screw gas blocks that will be found on our upcoming batches of barrels and going forward. It's simple. It's smart. It's what we do. We lead the industry in innovation.

Getting pretty slim for the .264 bore, but what is your thinking behind it?

Not for any .264, but for pencil barrels in 5.56.. I'm always looking and trying new configurations for the best combinations and price..I especially like the look of your clamp on gas blocks, great price and well designed with plenty of holding strength, 3 instead of 2 screws..

I see, cool, makes sense. I'll probably do it as I expand the line. The three screws serve two purposes: More strength, evenly distributed, and they can be smaller so that they fit nicely under freefloat handguards.

Just a quick barrel question.
Why do you use 4150 steel instead of 416R ? Not knowing or anything, just trying to understand the practical differences.

I currently have a Faxon 12" Gunner barrel and am considering a new build with a longer barrel for more range/velocity. Thinking 16 or 18" may serve my purposes well.

4150 is tougher and its rifling should last longer. 4150, being carbon steel, however, needs to be surface treated with something like black nitride to make it rust-proof. 4150, being tougher, is harder to machine, and thus THEORETICALLY harder to get the rifling more precise, which THEORETICALLY makes it harder to make an accurate barrel.

416R is softer and its rifling doesn't last as long, particularlly in the throat. 416R, being stainless steel, is "mostly" rust-proof without special treatment. 416R, being softer, is easier to machine, and thus THEORETICALLY easier to get the rifling more precise, which THEORETICALLY makes it easier to make an accurate barrel.

These accuracy claims are all anecdotal. They have not been rigorously and scientifically tested on a mass enough scale to draw valid conclusions.

Now, some guys are taking 416R with its easier machining benefits (easier machining is easier profits), and then black nitriding it, to give it a very hard surface treatment to toughen it up and make the rifling last longer. However, used to be that it was very difficult to do nitriding correctly on stainless steels — and some companies refused to take the risk of ruining a batch of stainless barrels and so refused to nitride them — but it's quite possible that this issue has been figured out.

Another consideration is that, if one doesn't black nitride stainless, then it's shiny silver, and because my emphasis has always been hunting and tactical with my barrels, reflectivity is not an option. The 6mmARC 416R stainless barrels I previously offered, I bead-blasted to make them non-reflective. I'm planning to offer a line of stainless barrels with slightly heavier profiles, but I'll either leave them polished for those who aren't worried about reflectivity, or I'll verify that, indeed, black nitriding is no longer a problem with stainless.

Do you have a preference that stainless barrels be left in the white or black nitrided?

I really like my Faxon barrel ( 416R - Nitride coated- Nickel Teflon extension ).
I went with Nitride for this build due to the reasons you gave in favor of it - harder surface and less reflectivity.

However, with a longer barrel, I won't really be concerned about reflectivity. It will be used mainly for longer range shooting where targets will be at a distance that it won't matter.
