Currently I need to decide between two rifles. Both are standard Anderson lowers with Geiselle triggers in them. One is a 16 inch monster barrel and the other an 18 inch sanders armory stainless barrel. I havent shot either one, but with out shooting (I know I know) where would you put your money? They will be some deer rifles and punch some paper. But I plan on building an 18 or 20 inch Krieger or Lilja next. Or maybe a bolt gun, just thought I would ask the board their opinion.

Neither - I would skip straight to the top-tier Krieger/Lilja if that is your plan. You can only shoot one gun at a time and as soon as you have assembled a more accurate Krieger, Bartlein or Lilja you will prefer nothing else. Plus, the money you save by not buying a poor cousin gun can be invested in the top-tier - a better scope or spare barrel.

Klem I am reading you loud and clear. I will be going with a top end rifle, however one of these will be coming home with me. Its partly because I want to help a buddy out, and partly because I wanna play while Im waiting. Cash isnt the deal breaker on Lilja, time getting the parts in right now is the concern. Until they arrive i intend to play a bit, and hopefully have a good rifle to let a buddy use his first time ever hunting. If all that makes sense?

I suppose if that's what you want to do with two beaters. Then again, Johnny Doughnut could have borrowed Jenny Craig's Grendel and do that with his Bartlein.
Let me put it another way, "Beware the man with one gun." There is an obvious benefit to not buying a second gun and investing it in the first.

A contrary adage come to mind regarding eggs and baskets. Nothing is infallible, and if you are going to put your life on it, iny opinion ypu should have a backup and backup of the backup.
If just cruising the random threads here has taught me anything, the man with one gun is the one most likely to go off the reservation.

With an average gun you'll probably need a back-up.

I agree with jd and zen. Always have a plan B. Over here it is always worth it to have a second functional rifle. If you can get a lilja and a krieger then go for that. Barring that option Id get the 16 monster unit. This gives you a diversity factor as well, a 16 and an 18. You can also specialize one rifle for one bullet and load each if you want. 90-100 grs for the monster and 123 for the 18, or some other combo.
things can wrong with more than just the barrel, so having that backup is a good idea.

After having a couple of Faxon Monster barrels and one Green Mountain Monster barrel Id probably buy the 16 Monster barrel. For a general purpose AR-15 the 16 Monster upper make a dandy rifle. The 16 5.56/223 is probably the most popular barrel length in AR-15s. A 16 6.5 Grendel can do anything a 16 5.56/223 is capable of. The 5.56/223 will be a little cheaper to shoot and have slightly quicker recovery time but the 6.5 Grendel has more energy and is a better medium game cartridge. The 5.56/223 is a better varmint cartridge if your concerned about pelt damage.

These type of questions always confuse me, if not entertaining.
Self defense, hunting, precision, multi-gun, end of world fantasy, all of the above???
Purchase the best rifle for it's intended use..Is money a factor, budget limits??
Deer rifle and paper punching.. Is weight and length important?? Is accuracy priority, which it should be for paper punching..
Only the user can answer these questions...

Well I was partly joking but if you have a viewpoint of systems resiliency, then 3 is 1 really 1.
There was a joke on this forum about what is the need of guns a normal person has. I'll try to find it.

I seem to have gotten the crowd going. I think Im going to just buy both and see which on I like more overall. MOA is what needs to happen for these rifles for the paper and ridge goats.
New question. If you were ordering a krieger or lilja, what length are you thinking. Im figuring 18-20, but open to ideas. It will be more precision shooting for that rifle with a bolt gun to follow. Im digging the round right now.

Sounds like a plan, JD. I took 3 to the steel range this morning. I take 10 shots out of each and rotate to keep the barrels cool. Plus, watching me gives all those who brought only one rifle something to do while their's cool off.

If you're looking a general purpose gun, it's hard to beat a 16" barrel, especially with the Monster's semi-lightweight profile. I'd snag the 16" Monster as your walkabout gun, and put the rest of your focus on the Krieger/Lilja in a 20" for target shooting.

Well OP since your likely going to buy both although you never mentioned a price or other features, keep the Monster for your stalking hunting rifle and use the other as donor, strip the Sanders barrel sell it and replace it with a Lilja, K or B barrel.

If you took 10 rifles and took 3 shots each, the barrels would remain even cooler....

True, but 3 shots isn't nearly enough to fully annoy the bolt guys. I find it takes at least 5 at my normal cadence to generate a meaningful leer.
