Howa Mini Rebarrel

Any advice for rebarreling a howa mini? Is it DIY like a savage? Any suggestions for barrel maker or gunsmith? I don't have a reliable gunsmith near me so open to suggestions. I was looking at preferred barrel blanks, either installing their barrel myself or sending the action to them.

i had the smaller 1.113" diam shank proof carbon barrel spun onto a howa and cz and smith had no issues, the standard shank diam. i believe is a little larger at 1.2" others can confirm but if you happen to peruse proof research barrels you'll see the two different diameters, it was recommended at the time that i use the smaller of the two diameters to for these

Thanks for the info. I've been eyeing the preferred barrel blanks. Debating whether it's a DIY job. I've read mixed reviews on removing a Howa barrel with some saying it's a pain.

McGowan also has what they call a Howage barrel and nut, which makes it just like a diy savage. And they can do the mini action.
Howa uses a metric barrel thread.
I've been looking at them if I want to do a barrel upgrade.

During a conversation about Howa with my gunsmith, he made a point to mention that the factory barrel can be extremely difficult to remove. He has had a few rifles that required him to weld a plate onto the barrel in order to get firm enough hold to use a very large lever bar to break/spin-off the factory barrel.

Maybe you give it a try and get lucky with normal "fit" barrel, and if she won't move then you enact Plan B and drive it over to LGS.

The older full size 1500 actions were a bitch to get the barrels off of. I wound up having to take a cut on the bbl shank with a parting tool right up against the receiver face to relieve the pressure on the joint, then could sometimes unscrew the OEM bbl by hand. It wasn't until 1500s with the HACT trigger came out that the bbls became routine to remove. Breaking a Mini bbl loose has never been a problem on any of the four actions that I've re-barreled.

My mini is currently off at Carbon Six getting a new 18" carbon wrapped barrel installed. They hadn't done a mini before so wanted my action and to do the work themselves. Not sure if that means it may be a standard option on their site eventually or not though. They are a sister company of McGowen I believe. I'll be sure to post a review once I get it back in a couple months. One thing to consider when rebarreling yourself is the cost of go/no-go guages. They can be pretty pricey, sometimes as much as paying a gunsmith for the install.

What action wrench did you use on the mini action to break it loose since it is smaller diameter action then the 1500 and Remington actions. Looking to order the correct action wrench to rebarrel my mini. I have a barrel vise I use for my terminus and Curtis actions but cant get a good answer on what action wrench for the mini. Thanks!

Sorry for the necro thread revival but has anyone successfully done this? I am looking at having a barrel done for my mini but it will be chambered in a 6.5 Dasher. I have my own reamer and will have my smith thread and chamber.

Have not done this, but have a 6.5 remington 700. It's a dumb question, but the dasher is based on a 308 sized case head, correct? Is your smith going to open up the bolt face?

The Dasher has a .473 boldface

if you can find one in 450 bushmaster you wouldn't need to open the bolt face, it is already .473
