Interesting. Navy, so the improved magazines are likely for the SEALs who are the likely military contract origin for the 6mm ARC. Better mags are better for everyone so I hope it happens soon.

These could be sourced through Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center in Southern Indiana. Crane procures a lot of equipment and performs testing for the Special Operations community (SOCOM). It is very common for different branches of the military to provide resources to different units across the military. At one time all K9 dogs and explosive detection training was completed in Florida for all of DoD. A lot of joint bases these days.

Sounds like you have a better bead on this than me. So much for the simple answer.

IMO, the "simple answer" is probably correct. Taking into account the statement from Hornady that 6mm ARC was developed at the request of an unnamed, but well-known, U.S. military unit, together with this notice from Crane, I think it's very likely that the project was indeed originated by and for the SEALs.

However, considering that the request is for an existing 6 ARC magazine, together with the 4 September response date, I wouldn't count on getting a new and better magazine.

One may not exist that meets all the requirements.

I'm sure a few existing ones we know will get thrown in.
the CPD duramag, maybe the Pri 6.8 with a blue follower, ....
One of our familiars just re-vamped their 20 round mag with different curvature, (forget the brand) could be this is why.

The C Products Defense sold as Duramag just released a twenty round 6.5 Grendel magazine for the AR-15. CPD/D sold a 20 round 6.5 Grendel magazine for a short period of time then discontinued the mag for unknown reason a couple years ago. I don’t think it is a coincidense the CPD/D is just now hitting the market.

I’m really curious to see if this military use will prompt Lancer or Precision Reflex Inc. “PRI”, (who coordinated with Knight’s Armament on the 6.8 magazine) to offer new mags.

Seeing as how neither Lancer nor PRI ever bothered making 6.5 Grendel mags, I can't imagine they would spend the time and $$$ to develop a completely new mag for the much smaller 6 ARC market.

Just out of curiousity, what did Knight's Armament have to do with development of PRI's 6.8 mag? I've never heard of KAC having any interest in that caliber.

KAC was one of the first to release the 6.8 SPC IIRC and to my recollection all their advertising showed the PRI mag. I can’t say who was first to market with a 6.8 SPC magazine but I believe at that time only C Products of New Britain, Ct and PRI were the only source for 6.8 SPC magazines.

Here is a related article and Remington might have been involved with getting the 6.8 Remington SPC SAAMI approved. Several AR-15 manufacturers sold 6.8 SPC caliber rifles but honestly I was more interested in the 6.5 Grendel and didn’t pay as much attention to the 6.8 SPC.

I have put some light use of one of my 6.8 mags, pretty sure it’s a pri. All they’d need to do is swap the greenish follower for a blue one, so not much of a stretch to try for some mil money.

Mind you I’m not particularly rooting for them, just sayin.

Try for some .mil money? I'd think that the military needs, at most, a few hundred mags. With the ammo cost that PRI would have to incur for function testing to ensure they meet the reliability requirement, they'd probably lose money on the deal. Just sayin. Wink

If it was a superior mag, they would maybe make their profit on civilian sales?

Agreed. With anything 6MM arc/ 6.5 grendel if the mil wants it, they will get it and whatever company makes it will make a killing saleing it too the civilian market.

Sure, IF it actually would be a superior mag, PRI undoubtedly would (eventually) make a profit from commercial sales. I was just addressing the idea of "going for some .mil money."

And, of course, even the potential profit from commercial sales would depend entirely upon whether or not their 6.8 SPC mags can be made to work reliably after conversion to 6 ARC.

The 6.5 Grendel market has existed for well over a decade. If it is so lucrative, and if 6.8 SPC mags function reliably with 6.5 G (and 6 ARC) just by installing a blue follower, it seems like PRI would've done it years ago and been raking in the cash all that time.

Shoot, Barrett markets their own 6.8 SPC magazine, with a 30-rd capacity, yet they didn't convert those to 6 ARC, despite the obvious firepower advantage. Instead, they apparently provided the military with 24-rd Grendel mags from another manufacturer.

Me, so I don’t really know. Maybe by converting their 6.8 mags they can sell them off cuz no one shoots 6.8 spc any more. Lol!!!

Received a few elander mags from LaRue with white followers only seen blue. Is this new or has elander always used white?

All I have ever seen on E-Lander are white followers in the 6.5 Grendel mags.

I got all-blue followers on Midway/AA branded 24 round E-Landers, and white followers on the ones I ordered from Brownells, that are just E-Lander branded, no AA. All tend to work fine after the "usual" E-Lander break-in process.
