6mm ARC
At the start of the Valkyrie craze Barrett had a Valkyrie sized Fieldcraft that disappeared when the Valkyrie didn't pan out. Maybe they will bring it back in 6mmArc. I can stop bugging Wilson Combat for a 243 H'mmer.

They are using the 5R style of lands/grooves, I hope.

Odin has 18" and 21" barrels up on their site. Both have XL Rifle gas systems. That would make a 14" gas system on an 18" barrel....

As a civilian shooter who wants a good general purpose AR15-sized rifle, I'm just not there yet in terms of giving up all my 6.5G handloading gear and affordable ammo to gain that extra little margin of performance. I'm also not very interested in a 14lb match rifle with a 24" barrel and a big scope on top.

It does sound like the sweet spot for DoD is an 18" barrel, as Barrett seems to be contracted to supply the REC7 DI in that barrel length.

I like the look of it for longer range shooting, which is a lot of what I do. An 18" ARC slinging 108gr ELDs right at, or even a bit over 200fps faster than my 16" Grendel will launch 123gr ELDs is pretty interesting to me.

Maybe they'll bring out a 6mm ARC flavor when the bring the whole Fieldcraft line back, I read a while ago that they temporarily (hopefully) stopped Fieldcraft production altogether to focus on fulfilling a DOD contract.

Lantac Firearms has this and more on their FaceBook page

Quote:Lantac LA-SF15™ 6MM ARC Chambered Rifle & Dedicated E-BCG®
Lantac is pleased to announce the release of its range of 6MM ARC chambered rifles and dedicated E-BCG®
For the past 2 years Lantac has been working closely with Hornady Manufacturing and PROOF Research undertaking testing and development of products that utilise the new 6MM ARC ammunition in a variety of bullet weights. Lantac was one of the first companies to become involved with this new caliber as part of a funded military research project and has conducted extensive evaluation and development work in that time.
Lantac’s new LA-SF15 6ARC 18’’ Rifle+1 gas system delivers 2629 FPS at muzzle with 2457FPS at 100M (109.36 Yards) and 1408 FPS at 800M (874.89 Yards). Energy is 1657 Ft-lb (2246 Joules) at 100M (109.36 Yards) and 475 Ft-lb (644 Joules) at 800M (874.89 Yards) approx.
Lantac has also developed a more compact 14.5’’ Intermediate gassed system that delivers 2483 FPS at muzzle with 2315 FPS at 100M (109.36 Yards) and 1302 FPS at 800M (874.89 Yards). Energy is 1285 Ft-lb (1742 Joules) at 100M (109.36 Yards) and 407 Ft-lb (551 Joules) at 800M (874.89 Yards) approx.
The velocity of multiple barrel lengths was tested to create a clear picture of 6ARC’s capabilities.

Question: for this rifle+1 gas length, guess that means a custom gas tube...?

Brilliant marketing drop by Hornady for the mass market. Just in time for the northern summer and a huge market share of the short (fat) 6mm market for PRC competition. Looks like a lot of manufacturers are on board for this blitz.

Well I have to say I will end up with an upper in this new 6MM. Felt the same way about the Grendel. Wonder who will be out there doing autopsy's for us on bullet performance?

Maybe this will mean we’ll get a polymer mag? Since you’d think if it’s made for the 6mm a 6.5mm would work for the Grendel too.

It’s crazy how all of this has hit the market, me personally I wouldn’t buy any barrel That utilizes a gas port location that’s used in standard AR’s of 556/6.5 location. This platform was developed from the ground up and what’s being used those involved is what you should use.

Not sure about necropsy, but Pig_Popper has ordered a barrel from Wilson Combat, said he wants to try it with 90gr bonded core bullets

That would be what Proof has been doing. They've been in this all the way and they've had a relationship with the military from near their beginnings.

Also makes me think 7.5 twist is just fine. I've always thought you should only go as fast as needed with the suspicion that fast twist creates a lot of lateral force on the jacket that can cause deformity or slippage that can affect accuracy. My personal theory on why the Valkyrie can have increased dispersion at longer ranges. Plus fast twist has been known to shed the thin jackets on Varmint bullets.

Lemonaid Wrote:BFT any estimates on when a Monster ARC will be available and at what price?

My MONSTER 6mmARCs will be priced the same as my 6.5 Grendels. For example, a MONSTER 12 6mmARC will be $133 and a MONSTER 20 will be $149 — at a quality and accuracy level giving nothing away to Faxon and Ballistic Advantage.

Unfortunately, availability is way out there. I guess when you're not Barrett even your reamer orders get put to the back of the line. Seems these vendors had secret advance notice and have already been working on it for 8 months, according to my reamer maker. I first heard of it with the rest of you guys when somebody posted the 6mmARC SAAMI print. Anyway, reamer is due in a month and a half and then, what, two months — at least — after that to complete barrels?

In the meantime, hey, my new design MONSTER UltraLite Three-Prong Flash Suppressors came in! Cool

Since I am low on ammo, and new to the 6.5 Grendel anyway, I may go 6mmARC.

I have found the advertised velocities, of 6.5 Grendel, way below the claims. Even reloads I can’t push much past factory without pressure signs. The pills are not as wide a selection as I would like that work with OAL. I couldn’t get 95gn TNT’s to group. So I was stuck with 123’s that did.

All I lose is a barrel and a die set. The Monster barrel deal is almost too good to pass up. I would love to hear some real world numbers on 85gn to 110gn velocity, per barrel length, and accuracy. I suspect the 12” barrel will be too short to get full powder burn. Being a smaller pipe with similar volume case. Might just be the perfect 14.6” pinned combination.

Well I have to ask mods, that shut my thread down in the reloading section to move it here. There is current product linked. BA and Brownells/Faxon barrels for sale now. That way we can get the Johnny be Quick’s to start load developing.

Be careful with your barrel, since it appears the barrels need longer gas systems to function properly or they’ll be over gassed and you’ll be breaking extractors.

Ok, I will play devil’s advocate. Sell me on this 6 arc. Warning, it ain’t gonna be easy.

1. The 6.5 Grendel does everything I need it to do and then some.
2. I have never been one to fall for shiney new stuff just to have shiney new stuff.

OK, I'll take a swing.... Cool

Is your primary use hunting? The 6.5 Grendel is an AR15 hunting cartridge with long-range target capability.

Is your primary use target shooting? The 6mmARC is an AR15 long-range target cartridge with hunting capability.

For long-range target shooting, 6mm bullets give you better BC for the same-weight 6.5 bullets, or same BC in lighter weight bullets. This means less recoil and more velocity — all wins for target shooting. Same argument PRS shooters will make in favor of the 6mm Creedmoor vs 6.5 Creedmoor.

Huge plus, in my mind, for 6.5 Grendel is Wolf steel-case. I got no problem shooting it even in my original cut-rifled Satern barrel cuz of the conclusions of the Lucky Gunner tests (don't go nuts with mag dumping and you'll be fine!).

I think I'd boil my argument down to this: 65G has heavier bullet mass for more smack on big game. 6mmARC has better external ballistics with even less recoil than 65G.

If you already have one you don't NEED the other. But what do you WANT? Cool

I have to admit I'm tempted to replace the 18" barrel on my 6.5G SPR setup with 6ARC while keeping my 6.5G 12" KS-47 for blasting with 6.5G steel cased Wolf.
