Hornady 100g Spirepoint

Yeah Jake that is exactly what it is-a 6.8 necked to 6.5 with a slightly steeper shoulder. It is called the 6.5 DTI built by Mike Milli(DTECH). It is reinventing the wheel I know but was figuring on using 6.8 mags and brass as they 'might' be more available than those for the 65G.

IIRC the 6.8 case is longer than the Grendel. What's the heaviest and longest-nosed bullet you can seat and still run through the magazine?

JA-I am going to start with the 100g Nosler Par, Bal Tip, and Hornady spirepoint as deer loads. But hopefully it will handle the 120-123 class also. For coyotes I will use the lighter 'varmint' bullets. I will have the first/second one(Mike is building one for himself also) ever built so all will be new ground. TTT

Just make sure whatever bullet you choose that the case neck is in full contact with the bullet. Since the case is longer than the grendel some bullets will be so far into the case the ogive will be into the mouth of the case. You don't want the case mouth unsupported or you may have feed problems. Nosler makes a 100 gr BT you could possibly remove the plastic tip to get the bullet out farther.

Good 'points' Rasp65. I was figuring on the ogive/neck issue but never thought about removing the plastic tips. My PRI 6.8mag will allow oal of nearly 2.275. The 100s should be fine and certainly with tip clipping the 120s will probably work too. TTT

I routinely load to 2.30" in the C Products mags that I have.

It's good to see that some magazines are more tolerant of long cartridges than others!

Problem is that even the 2.30" COAL leaves a maximum nose length of 0.64" -- ruling out a lot of bullets. I checked the Berger Quick Reference sheet and found that the added magazine length could likely let you use their 100 gr (0.600") and their 120 gr (0.597) BTHP bullets. Their BC's are 0.370 and
.453 respectively.

You could call Nosler, Hornady, and others to get advice on which of their bullets might work for the nominal magazine length as well as the slightly longer one that rasp65 mentioned.

Thanks for the good info guys. I tried to find some 10 rnd C Products mags but CP is evidently undergoing some sort of upheaval or sale/reorganization and none are available. I use the CP mags in my .223 and like them-perform well and are inexpensive. I can trim the 6.8 brass back 10 to 15 thousandths and get a bit more room that way too. Now to just get the upper here so I can start the process!! TTT

True, trimming to shorter case-length does not give more room.

The problem is the difference between COAL and case length needs to be enough to accommodate the ogive. The 10-15 thousandths in this context may let him run a few additional bullet types through the magazine.
