Do you use Wolf Ammo and Why do many seem to think its bad? Whats the best group u go

Do you use Wolf steel cases ammo in your Grendel? I see a lot of people talk about it having no experience with it I wonder why.
In the old days I would shoot Norinco in my Sks 99.00 for a 1000 case ( The good ole days).
Whats the best groups you have gotten with?

I shoot it in my AA 16 inch barreled rifle.

No pic but best group I have seen it do was 10 shots 1.5 inch's.

I use it as plinking shtf/home/self defense ammo, that's what it was designed too be. I don't shoot it throw my longer or more expensive barrels because I have no use for that ammo/bullet in those rifles.

If it damages my 16 AA barrel it will take thousands of rounds for me too know it and by then the barrel will be shot out and I will drop anouther AA barrel in it.

I get a kick out of guys buying bottom tier barrels and then complaining the wolf is going to destroy their barrel and accuracy.

That's my thoughts others will be along shortly to disagree with it I'm sure.

Isn't it all just plinking? I mean unless you are actually hunting.
I use it whenever I feel the need to just shoot.
If I remember right, I think I have done 2 to 3 MOA.

So far in my 18" heavy barrel it shoots & functions really good. Tried a 24rnd mag dump with it, no problem.
1 1/2" 5 shot group at 100yds is the best I have done with it. At 600yds, my grandson was ringing the gong all afternoon with the Wolf. Affordable way for a kid to learn to shoot distance.
Accuracy wise, it and Hornady Black have been about the same in my gun.
I carefully cleaned the chamber and bore after shooting it, and quite frankly, it was not bad for residue at all.
I have some 130gr Berger Federal Premium, it is really tight group accurate, but it is also 5x the price of the Wolf/20rnds
I wish the Wolf was available with a 120-125gr FMJ as well

I have similar experience with Wolf steel case, hitting a milk jug consistently at a bit over 300 yards. 24" heavy barrel, and with no malfunctions at all. Like Armadillo says, is an inexpensive way to get some practice in, or just to shoot something. I don't normally shoot it much.

I meant to say before posting, that I still don't quite follow where the damage to the barrel might occur with the steel cased stuff. That, and its inaccuracy, seem to be the 2 biggest barriers for not having widespread use.

Wolf steel case is fine for just plinking--cost is much easier to handle,25 cents per bang versus 70 cents(Hornady AG). I also have 16" AA barrel with no problems.

I will not use steel case or bimetal jacket that contains steel. Only in a last resort if SHTF and that's what I had.

In theory though, the money saved by using Wolf and getting a lot of plinking enjoyment you can afford to buy a new barrel possibly with some $ left over when the time comes.

To use or not to use, neither is wrong. Just the preference of the person....

i shoot a lot of it. it shoots to the same point of aim as does my hornady black does.i have shot some great groups with it at times. my son had a 5/8" group at 200 out of a x-caliber barrel. i know that is hard to believe. i was there and saw it. shocking

I shoot it out of my 16" aa barrel. It's great for me for trigger time working on fundamentals. The 2-3" groups don't bother me because that's not what it's for.

I've used tons of steel cased ammo in .223 in AR15s for a decade. Some guns don't like it, and it usually isn't very accurate, but if you can get past those two issues it is a great, cheap source of ammo.

Now this 6.5 Grendel Wolf ammo is a different animal (no pun intended). It tends to be serviceably accurate in most rifles (3 MOA or better) and in a few rifles very good (1.5 MOA is about the best I've heard of). Compare this to my usual experience with .223 steel case at 4-6 MOA and it's a world of difference. It's a steal at $.25/rd.

Wolf is an importer, they don’t make ammo. This 6.5g is made in the Barnaul plant which makes some of the best shooting steel 7.62x39 & 5.45x39.

I’ve always been impressed with the performance of Hornady Black but Wolf steel is a third of the cost. Am. Gunner is 2.5x the cost of Wolf. That’s a big jump.

Now if Wolf could make brass case 6.5g in the Phillipino plant that makes Gold .223 I’d try a case of that.

Wolf used to offer a 6.5 Grendel in their Gold line... but I dont know where it was actually made.

Wolf Gold was manufactured by Prvi Partizan in Serbia PPU (123 grain soft point and 120 grain MPT). Wolf Gold 223 Remington is loaded in Taiwan close to M-193 5.56 pressure/velocity with 55 grain FMJ.


The Wolf Gold 6.5 Grendel ammo was never recalled like PPU branded 6.5 Grendel ammo.

Steel case wolf is just plinking ammo for me. I shoot it knowing it may hit a small critter or it won't. Prairie dogs get more chances if I just bring wolf steel. I prefer better factory ammo or handloads. I'll still shoot wolf steel occasionally, but it's usually only at the dog towns.

At what distances do you shoot Prairie dogs? I assume they are tuff to hit. As a kid on vacation dad stopped to let me see a Prairie dog village
