A5BLASTER Wrote:Just a side thought but I would be willing to hazard a guess maybe the bca barrel had a short throat and was catching enough of the bullet to pull it forward when it was extracted.
I know the bca barrel I had for a total of 4 days had a very short throat, no ammo even my handloads that are 2.200 oal with the short 85 grain trex would chamber without hitting and getting marks from a short throat.
The throat on that one would support a COL of over 2.300", the first three of their barrels were short throated though. No marks on extracted rounds at all on that last one.

p45- send it back - get it checked out. Don't waste your time trying fix others mistakes. Something is wrong there. To all of you on our forum- take screen shots with your fone so you can prove all that's going on with your upper that was made by a millennial that doesn/t care as much. As we do! do it!

Resurrecting this thread for a follow up on the bullet movement.
I ordered a Hardened Arms Grendel upper as I already have two uppers from them that perform above their pay scale. Found one on a summer sale and it just arrived last week. Throat is on the short end of spec, but it is in spec.
Anyway, I seated the same old Nosler 120's in empty brass to make sure that they would feed and extract correctly. I ran three dummy rounds through the action a few different times and not a single bullet moved a thousandth!
I was finally able to get a half hour to get to the range yesterday evening and function test the upper. Everything ran well with no hiccups. In fact, just shooting at debris on the 100 yard berm seemed that shot #1 and #2 hit the same spot (relatively on dirt anyway). Impact seemed to be straight low on my first BDC ring in the Nikon, so I held that ring on a dirt clod and busted it. Two more adjustments and I need to move to paper targets as I think I am already really close to zero as shown by hits on a pop can. As part of this run, I fired the first four rounds and then cleared #5 and measured OAL and even gas-feeding did not move the bullet at all. And I was not using any crimp at all on these loads as I am right on the 0.004" neck tension with the Hornady dies.
So whatever problem I was having previously with the bullets moving while chambering in the junk BCA uppers, I cannot duplicate in my new Hardened Arms upper. And the only change has been the uppers; nothing changed on my sizing or loading procedures or with buffer or spring combo in the lower.
Once I get a chance to properly sight in and check accuracy, I will start another thread to report on the HA upper.

Well now that changing uppers seems to have fixed your problem, it would be useful to find out exactly what was causing the problem in the other upper assembly's. Yes, I know you don't have them anymore.
I thought that my problem with bullet movement was solved, I was wrong, bullets are still moving .002 regardless of bullet weight. Much less, but still moving. Reading around, it seems that this is more wide spread than was thought, as you pointed out before.
I did check my 5.56 AR's and they don't show any problem. I am also going to try a different brand of cases.
Another thing, I have been checking with one round in the mag and releasing the carrier using the release lever, I need to load a full mag and see what happens. Might slow down the carrier speed enough to cure the problem.

Wish I could help out with suggestions, but I have no idea why the BCA uppers would cause the bullets to pull and the Hardened Arms upper does not.
If anything, I would have expected the rougher feed ramps on the BCA's to cause set back of the bullets instead of bullets slipping forward in the neck.
I tried the Hardened Arms upper first with a single-loaded mag and I thought "no way, it didn't move!" and that is when I made up two more dummy rounds and really racked the charging handle all the way back and was even pointing the barrel downward while letting the bcg slam the dummy round home. Ran through the three and no movement, so I ran them all through again and again. Still no bullet slippage.
My final test was on the bench to let the gas system chamber one and to clear it and check the measurement. I am good to go!! And again, this was with NO crimp at all. Just neck tension from the standard New Dimension Hornady die set.
My 5.56 and also the .300 BLK neither one cause any change in OAL.
Just puzzles me.

I always use the carrier release, instead of sling shotting the charge handle, noticed some years ago that the slingshot method chews up charge handles. I still need to test with more rounds in the mag, might try to do that today if I get time. I don't crimp unless the bullet has a cannelure, and then just a kiss of crimp.
