Rem 700SA 6,5 Grendel project.

Aha!

Thanks for claification.
Yes. I´ve loaded up about 20 round of the 24,9gr load. Will shoot it on paper the next time, but can also have the magnetospeed on during that firing and collect the SD/ES.

Also, as I am sure you know, if this is a new barrel, it will need some rounds down range to get broken in, and will/should pick up some speed. Could be 50 rounds, could be 250.

Yeah.
This is a new barrel.

The thought have crossed my mind that I should shoot and be happy, for a couple of round more and try to learn the gun. Shooting, trigger, scope, bipods etc. And then check for speednodes.

Shot the last of the new Lapuabrass.
Same load and same bullet.
24,9grs of VV N-133
123grs Lapua Scenar

20shots
Avrage: 708 m/s (2323 fps)
SD: 2
ES: 12

About 10 degree celsius hotter on the range.
And shot a bit faster between each shot so the barrel got a bit warmer in the end but it seems that the MV wasn´t affected that mush.

The first try to hit on target at 100meters, 5 shots:

Not superexited at this point but it was crazy with snowmirage and the target moved all over. Also the prone shooting can be improved. Had to rase the buttstock rally high, and this is not an improvement for my shooting.

But in the end.
I think I will continue on this load and try to change the seating depth and see if the group can get smaller.

Second, I’m looking at doing the same thing. I’ll PM you my thoughts. I really appreciate your project, and want to make one of my own.

Have continued and tried a lighter bullet.
The Lapua Scenar 108gr.
Same powder, N133.

Here are a diagram over the first two tests:

I´ve used a sort of "10rd load developement" but with a lot more than 10 rounds Big Grin
But in the end, the thought is to find the nodes where the speed flattens and then test the load in the middle of that flatspot. This should give a load with low SD/ES that can be helpful to compensate for small changes.

The two loads that I will test next are 26,8gr and 27,6gr. Have loaded 10 rounds of the two and will check for SD/ES.

I tested the 2 loads with 10 rounds.

Result showed that the 26,8gr of N133 gave the best SD/ES.
Avg. speed: 2605 fps
Distance: 100-110 yards

I then loaded 5 rounds with 5 different jump from the lands and tried to find the best precision.

5 rounds with 0.078" jump
5 rounds with 0.039" jump
5 rounds with 0.019" jump
5 rounds with 0.007" jump
5 rounds with -0.007" jump (jammed in to the lands)

A little small pictures but hope it works.

I have now settled with the 4th one, 0.007" jump.

That is impressive, Second. Congratulations with your success! What velocities are you seeing with your settled load?

Thanks!
Speed with this load and about 46F in temperature: 2605 Fps.

If you are searching for maximum speed I think you need to go to a slower powder like N540.
It has a similar burn rate to CFE223 which many people here use for the 123gr bullet.
Here is a chart that is useful when comparing loads and powder burn rates.

As for now, I’m quite satisfied with this powder ans bullet and the speed that I’ve got.

Very good. 2600 Grendel is no slouch. Are you still using the L 108grain?

Yes.
The Lapua Scenar 108gr is the bullet used.
Will probably have this bullet as my "safe one" to be used for target shooting and continue to test it at other distances.

Are in the end test with the Hornady 123gr SST and the VV N133.
This will be my hunting bullet for small game, like fox, beaver, badger, roe deer, etc.
Will end somewhere in the 2450-2500 fps with that load.

But the plan is to test a more heavy bullet for target shooting also.

Good luck with the SSTs. Not many people have success with that. For your hunting, you might want to look at the Federal 90gr TNT. DNS has been using it exclusively and has been having great success with it on feral hogs up to 200#.

Aha.
Is there a problem with the SST regarding preformance as a hunting bullet or a precison problem?

I don't want to comment for Sticks, but from all recent reports, it seems like something in the SST manufacture has changed. They aren't producing the tiny groupings they were known for a few years ago. Personally, I am not sure it it's because of the bullet, or some other change. The reports of increasing group sizes have been fairly consistent. It is like the ratios of good-to-poor performance have reversed. The reports used to be full of folks who had great luck with the SSTs and only a few that didn't like the accuracy provided using it. Now, it seems like many more folks are disappointed with the SST, and only a few end up being pleased with it's excellent performance.

Personally, I think Hornady has changed the SST process in favor of making it a simple "hunting" bullet, and is focused on making the ELD-M lines their accuracy line. This could reduce the costs associated with pumping out a bullet that would rarely be loaded for absolute accuracy in favor of higher velocity terminal performance. Pretty understandable, as the ELD-M bullets are now Hornady's accuracy and competition flagship. And, they're pretty good bullets; their construction would seem to lend itself better to longer range game taking better than the SSTs anyway which seems to suffer drastically as velocity and energy decline in longer range Grendel application. These are only my personal theory; The reports of disappointing accuracy are becoming more wide spread.

Strictly accuracy. Performance for hunting they are reportedly excellent. But you can't kill it if you cant hit it.

Ok!
God to know.

Will be interesting what groups I get.
After that, I will decide if it works enough accuracywise

This post might be better in the reloading section, but since I started here, I might finish here also.

I´ve not got to the end of the testing with the Hornady 123 gr SST and VV N133.
The load is 26,6gr and the speed ended up in 749 mps (2457 fps)
The range is 100 meters, prone position with bipods and rear bag.

I loaded up 5 rounds with 5 different jump to see what worked best.

This is the result:
1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

I have settled with the No.4.

This will work for me accuracywise I think Big Grin
If I do my part, I will hit the selected game within ranges that I intend to hunt, probably max out to 300 meters.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I would settle on #4 as well from those groups. Good shooting.

On the SST bullets I have never gotten the accuracy from them that I got from the A-Max bullets which I am still working on depleting my stock of.

For a heavier accurate bullet to try if you want checkout the Berger 130gr Hybrid. For a heavier hunting bullet my choice is the Nosler 129gr LRAB. Some report they are not accurate but from my CZ they shoot just over half inch to just under averaging right around the half inch at 100 yards.
