New grendel, wont fire

I had an issue with mine when I first got it. The ammo was a little tight, tight enough I couldn't eject my rounds it would pop the bullet projective off the casing. Sent it to Bill and he fixed it for me. Reamed out the chamber and its been good ever since.

noobshooter, I got it complete, I have no other AR parts, this is the first one I have ever touched.

Any markings might be under the handguard, have you pulled that?

I didnt buy it brand new from AA, (they were months out of stock), I bought it from a dealer that claims they assembled it and shot it a few times to make sure it worked... Playing with it here, I take a round and put it in by hand and push it in as far as I can with my fingers and put a cleaning rod in the muzzle and put a mark on it when it touches the head of the bullet, then load one with the bolt, and it stops in the same spot. The ammo just isnt going into the barrel far enough I think.. How the heck do I fix that?

Seat the bullet deeper. If the brass alone enters and extracts EASILY by hand, there is nothing wrong with the brass or chamber for that matter. What you are describing appears to be overall length. The bullets are out too far.

Do something just in case.

Send us a measurement of the overall length of a single loaded cartridge. Then seat the bullet deeper using a seating die until the cartridge chambers and extracts easily by hand (do not shoot).

If the two measurements are not that far off, there is a great chance that you can shoot the ammo without dangerous pressure issues. Given you have a reloading press and die set.

No, I won't say how much a difference is good or not. Just curious about how much the bullet needs to be seated deeper before it will chamber and extract easily. The real issue is this. The chamber or throat is not cut properly. If the barrel was short throated, it won't get fixed by shooting ammo through it. It needs to be fixed by being properly reamed.

After looking at the pics, I've had the same issue before. May sound silly but I had the wrong buffer spring. I put a carbine spring in a rifle length tube. Would not cycle the bolt hard enough to push the bolt forward all the way. I could get the forward assist to set the bolt. It would fire and jam almost every shot. Finally thought to swap the spring and it fixed it. Cheap easy fix if that's your problem. Good luck.

these are factory hornady ammo, I dont have dies yet, was hoping to run a few boxes of factory ammo through it before having to spend more money on stuff. This upper has been fired, it had some unburnt powder in it, and a few wear marks, and black on the end of the barrel, I dont understand why it wont work for me.

if I really slam the bolt forward, I need a hammer to eject the shell, something really sticks. I dont think its a spring. I wish these werent so rare, if someone near me had different ammo or something I can try Id be ecstatic.

Hi Jamie, my upper actually came from Bremerton, ever heard of cloescombat?

I have the handguard about 1/2 way untwisted, I just cant hang onto it its so tight, going to get one of those strap wrenches to see if thatll grab it without messing it up. If there is no AA stamps on this thing, Im going to be even more pissed.... If there is, then Ill keep plugging on it to get it to work. maybe Ill have to send it to AA? I just dont understand how they fired this thing before..

I dont know if this isnt the bolt carrier they used on it before, as he was selling it without that and the firing pin, but put it together for me so Id have something complete and working.. supposedly...

if everyone thinks it may be a bullet depth issue I can pull one and try it without a bullet. Thoughts? I figured it was a case hitting something issue?

Most likely its a case issue, with the shoulder hitting the chamber. Some of the early Hornady cases were on the very maximum side of the specs, and some chambers are on the very small size of the specs and that causes problems.

Some of us have fixed the problem by resizing the loaded ammo, (very carefully!) with a die with the stem removed.

AA ammo uses Lapua cases, which are always on the very minimum size of the specs, so I wanted to see if they would work, or if hand loaded ammo would work, which also tends to bring the cases back to close to normal specs.

if it is simply it not liking hornady, Ill start right off with reloading, I just need to find this out asap so I can get going, need to use this thing in 1mo in cali... Everyone is so far away.

What other ammo should I buy to try? what works in everything? Or someone mail me some reloads or something? I really really appreciate the help all!

Probably would give you a worthwhile data point. After reviewing all the posts, I’m with Bill on suspecting an ammo issue, either the shoulder is too far forward or the bullet is too far out. Check some of the bullets of the ammo you tried to seat for evidence of the lands marking the bullet. That should look different from the scratches made by the trip from the mag to chamber.
