What Barrel Length on Your Grendel AR(s)?

I love all of my Grendel’s but my 20” is my overall favorite even though it is like carrying a cement block around.

but rather as a rifle as the ATF allegedly can't tell you that you can't put your Glock to your shoulder and shoot that like a rifle either.

I would almost like to see the look on someones face after they tried that.. I pretty much did the same thing tucking into cover with a autococker paint ball gun back in the day. Just for all you out there thinking im cruel or sumthin'

I voted 18 since that has been what my JP barreled upper has had in it since I built it but will be moving up to a 20 or 22 before too long.

Clearly more is better! However, if you were to build two, what lengths would you build? I am building a 12.7" (group buy) and was going to build another 18". Is that good or is more truly better?

For me 18 is plenty out to 500 hundred, I just wanted to go a lil longer for two reasons.

1 add a lil more weight to the rifle to make it more stable on shoots out too 1000.
2 get the muzzle brake out away from my face a lil more.

I've found that pretty much any barrel length in 6.5 Grendel is pretty boring to shoot at 500yds, unless you shoot 2 MOA targets or less.

Even this little 12" is easy to hit things with at 500yds, and you know it when you hit it.

Which is why I settled on 16" for my build. It gives me more reach than my 18" 5.56, while still being relatively compact & lightweight. At the time of my build, I didn't want the hassle of dealing with a pinned muzzle device or having limits on use of my pistol. Since I'm in CA, my AR15 pistol is considered an Assault Weapon now, and it cannot be used for hunting on public land. Otherwise I'd probably be jumping on board the ~12" Grendel wagon.

In my case a 16" barrel makes sense as the best all-around compromise. At any rate, I'm looking forward to dialing in my new SWFA 3-15x (SFP) scope this weekend!

I've settled, for the moment, on a 14.5 and a 20" (group buy). The 14.5 is just plane a fun gun to shoot. Mostly Wolf Steel case ammo and an excellent brush gun. The 20" is my bean field gun, for reaching out there. More is definitely better. I say settled but there always seems be something on the horizon that pulls me back into another build. Lol, love it.

I used worst-case velocities we've been seeing with the newer Hornady 123gr SST lots of ammo.

123gr ELD-M seems to be faster like the old 123gr AMAX load. Supersonic range has the corresponding wind drift with it. 123gr ELD-M isn't the best bullet for long range, but one of the most popular and available, so I used that.

I used .255 doppler-based G7 drag model for the longer range figures with 123gr ELD-M.

I used .462 G1 for the "within 500yds" figures on the 123gr SST for hunting.

All figures are with 100yd zero, 2.5" optic over bore height, standard atmospheric conditions (59° F, 29.53" hg barometric pressure).

Another graph to look at would be weapon weight with pictograph diagrams showing weapon length and profiles.
