The only question I now have is, which one of us is Van Helsing or Dracula? Well, since you're re-posting the same post you just posted a couple of minutes ago, you're clearly trying to have the last word. So, how are things in Transylvania these days?

The right to defend yourself is as basic as the right to breathe.

Those societies that chose not to defend themselves by and large no longer exist. Same for individuals.
This could help explain our gut instinct for self defense.
. . . and, yes, it definitely applies to the right to keep and bear arms.

I need a rifle with a high capacity magazine with sufficient kinetic energy to put down a feral hog with one shot out to 200 yards allowing effective firepower to take out as many of a sounder as possible in a single engagement.

The societies who empowered and trusted their governments to protect them and then freely turned in their firearms. You know, the same kind of people in our country who who think only the military and police should have weapons like the AR-15, which serves that very purpose. Kind of hard to defend yourself when you willingly give that option away. Those societies!

That's a stretch and you've violated what you have been preaching about says what it means and means what it says...

There have reportedly been no mass shootings by loonies since the ban. And no massacre of citizens by the government.
So, which societies are you talking about? Names, please, not vague philosophical statements.

You are side stepping again. stanc Wrote:Which societies chose not to defend themselves? The University of Hawaii's study on democide is not a vague philosophical statement. The common denominator in all of those countries was strict gun control.

To bear = to hold or carry Heh, heh. Where in the Second Amendment does it say that arms must be borne/carried on the person?

Stan, your attitude is almost child like. So I will explain it to you like one. Most Governments are put into power by people who later on regret it. People make up a society and if they are killed off by the millions they no longer exist. Millions of Gypsies, German, Russian, Chinese, Cambodian, Cuban, Armenian, Etc, etc, etc no longer exist because they were willingly or forced to be deprived of the fundamental right to have the means to defend themselves. These governments were not put into power and given the ability to disarm their subjects with out the support of the very same people who put them into power. Through ignorance or intention they put all the power into the hands of the few believing it would make for a safer and more harmonious society. The adage of power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely was forgotten or ignored by these gullible people. This is why the founding fathers of the American revolution believed in division of power. As a last result, they gave the citizens of their nation the Bill of Rights and the 2nd Amend to prevent such concentration of power. But even today there are Americans who have forgotten the lessons of history and believe in disarming the citizens like the subjects in England and Australia. It will never happen here they cried because we are a much more advanced, educated, cultured people they wailed. Fortunately there were more American citizens who never swallowed the kool aid and took Benjamin Franklin's advice:Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. They new what is today could be different tomorrow.

Shoot, there are more Chinese now than there ever were in the past.
So I ask again: Which societies no longer exist because they chose not to defend themselves?

Random thoughts:
- There are natural rights, like self defense, and government given rights, like killing babies. I need a defensive rifle because the government has not eliminated (simply outlawing doesn't work) bad things from happening to me that a defensive rifle can help me solve.
- A 17 year old male is in the Unorganized Militia (10 USC 246) and, if called to duty, must appear with a weapon of his own procurement (U.S. v. Miller, 307 U.S. 174 (1939)), not one his mommy bought for him.
- I have seen arguments (I believe by the SCOTUS, and I am not saying it is right) that indicate the arms referred to would be what an individual would use, so RPGs, manpads, and mortars should be included.
- If we were meant to be able to protect ourselves from the government, see above.
- Don't fight the last war, get a laser.
