I'm gonna upgrade a few hunting scopes this year. Hogs/deer/coyotes. probaby average 50-200 yard shot dusk and dawn hunting. Maybe on a "perfect set up" 550 yards in good light. I want a lited reticle dot but enough magnification to take a shot when only part of the animal is exposed. I DONT want >18oz big honking scope on a 51/2 lb rifle. And does anyone think the CDS option would be of any value at these ranges? Am thinking of 1 in 3-9 x 40 and another in 3-9 x50. thanks.

Not really the same scope but I have a 3 X 9 X 40 Leupold Mark AR scope with mil dot reticle. I'm a little disappointed on the use of this scope in low light compared to a cheap 2.5 X10 X 44 mil dot scope with lighted reticle. Even without using the lighted reticle the cheaper larger scope is quite a bit better. I don't know how this will differ from a VX III but I think the 44 MM objective or 50 MM makes a noticeable difference. I ended up buying a Vortex strike fire in the event I know I'm going to be poking around in the dark at close range. If I know I'm going to be shooting longer range I have my other rifle with the larger higher magnification scope.

In low light, bigger objective lenses help a lot.
I'm trying to figure out how your AR only weighs 5 1/2 pounds, though! The Ultralite I have weighs that, and it is about as tricked as an AR can be! Lightened 16" barrel, with integral suppressor, lightened bolt carrier, etc.
How did you do that?

personally I have liked and been satisfied with EVERY VX-III I had , nothing new though all older scope. 6-24, 3-9, etc.
The VX-I 4-16 that I bought last year I considered a good purchase, the only thing I did not like was the friction adjustments. Leupold said that they would convert to Target knobs for a small nominal fee.
Although the new Redfield I have seen since being produced by Leupold appears to be great just need to get it outta the store and check them out.
This is for a bolt action Grendel. Just put on a shortend kevlar stock, flute a 16" barrel, flute the bolt and bolt handle. Then you have a nice light weight simple dependable hunting rifle.
