What would you build?

Odds are I'll be buying a Remington 700 chambered in 270WSM from my brother in law in the next few months. I'll basically be using it for a donor action, but am undecided as to what to build on it. I'm leaning towards a 7WSM, but am open to suggestions.

So the question is, what would you build on a short action with a magnum bolt face?

Also, it will mainly be used for target shooting beyond 1000 yards. Possibly for elk hunting in the future. I'll still use the Grendel for deer size game and smaller.

JMHO, I would shoot the 270WSM for a while and see how it does ... It's a great round.

But it sounds like you want to up grade, so in that case, I would go with a 6.5 or 7mm RSAUM. Check them out on Accurate Shooter.

If you don't like the 270 WSM, I would also look at 6.5 SAUM. No matter what you choose in the WSM and RSAUM brass line-up, brass availability and price will be very significant.

The GAP 6.5 SAUM4S is meant to run at ~55,000psi so you don't lose as much throat/barrel life as you would with the others.

What twist is the current 270 WSM? There are actually some decent bullets available for the 270 in the higher weight ranges. For target work, I use the 135gr SMK, but the 140gr SST, 130gr Berger Classic Hunter, Berger 140gr VLD Hunter, and a few others have decent BC's that when combined with the speed, are good performers if you have a 10" twist.

Based on what you have to start with, I would lean to the GAP 6.5 SAUM4S, blueprint the action, and get a Bartlein barrel.

6.5 SAUM 4S is a great no-nonsense cartridge that is easy to shoot. I am getting a real 3250fps from pointed 130gn VLDs out of mine.

Stepping up to 7mm requires a fair bit more bullet and cartridge to achieve the same trajectory. That means more recoil and in a 7lb rifle that will make it a little more tricky to shoot in all those odd field positions.
