Beowulf Optics
#1
I just got my Beowulf from AA and now Im thinking of sights. From what I have read I think I like the EOTECH with an EOTECH 3X magnifier. What do you all think?

You won't need the magnifier, but ask Bill Waites about it. He has a Leupold 1-4x CQB on his, which seems to work well for that platform. I think 200yds is where you max out for acceptable drop. Beo owners chime in...

I'm in agreement. I've made hits on 10" steel at 400 yards consistently, even using the Leupold, but 200 is my real max. I'm not an EOTECH guy, so I'm a lousy one to ask.

I'd probably go Vortex for the money, (I got a great deal on the Leupy!).

SPARQ with magnifier or the Viper PST 1-4.

If you want to spend a lot, the Leupold HAMR is seriously cool.

Or go the route I did:

I actually think the CQT might be the perfect Beo optic, but I know others will disagree.

I would not recommend the Eotech sights. Especially for the Beo. The older models with the battery running parallel to the barrel have a big problem with the spring getting weak from the recoil and inertia driving the battery in to it. The Beo is abusive on this optic. I give it about 75 rounds before the optic starts to "malfunction" due to the spring. The models with the battery perpendicular are better, but they still have long term durability issues. Choose the Leupold, or a Aimpoint. Just my .02.

I have been looking at the aimpoint too. Which one of them would you recommend and why?

I like the HAMR but I dont know if I can spend that much again this year. The CQT is more in my price range. I would like to find a place to check it out. I was set on the EOTECH, but I definetly dont want issues with it after I mount it on the .50. I didnt think of durability issues before. Im glad I ask questions on here.

The HAMR is spendy!

The CQT has been surpassed in a lot of ways, but I think its a sleeper as far as a short range optic. Tough as nails, it just works!

Does anyone have any feedback on the Aimpoint CompM4?

not sure about the durability issues you speak of on the new XPS models. I've had no issues with mine, and I've used it on several rifles. You can find some great deals on them. I picked up a brand new XPS 2-2 (65 MOA ring with (2) 1moa dots) for just above $400......that's priced like an EoT 512 model!!!!

One of the things with the original Eotechs is that a lot of guys were jacking theirs up so they could direct-exchange for the newer models that ran on AA batteries when they were introduced. They have been a primary go-to optic over the Aimpoint in Tier 1 units for about a decade, if that means anything. The above XPS 2-2 with the two different dots would be nice for drop at distance, using the lower dot. The biggest question is whether or not you want magnification. I personally would lean towards a 1-4x from Vortex, just so I could have the option to dial up and see what I could squeeze out of the Beo at distance, or make more precise shots on reactive targets like watermelon, soda jugs filled with alka-seltzer, Tannerite-packed refrigerators, and so forth. Isn't that what Beo's are for......?

LRRPF52, Your right, I lot of Tier 1 guys were using them for the last few years. More of them that I have talked to have had issues and are switching to the Aimpoint T-1 (as of the last year or so), the H-1 would be a good option for the Beo, no need for the night vision settings, unless your hunting hogs. I agree with your choice of the vortex 1-4x, I think it is a great option for hunting or fruit :-)

Yeah, the Mini Red Dot sights make a ton of sense as far as weapon profile and weight are concerned. I'm leaning more towards the Micro Red Dots for non-magnified dot sights for that reason, such as the Trijicon RMR.

the trijicons have huge reticles on them...... the smallest is a 3.25MOA dot....the largest is the 13MOA dot or 12.9 MOA Triangle....

I guess those are for up close and personal work!

The Leupy Delta Point is a solid design. Plus it uses a Triangle for the aiming point, allowing you to have a very precise tip to use for precision shots, or a larger surface if you have to shoot a moving target. The Trijicon is similar. I would try to pick one up and look at it if possible to see which works best for you.

I'm actually looking to mount one of the Dr. Optic type Micros in the M16A2 upper receivers, since many of my KISS carbines will only use a red dot. That will help limit a lot of snag issues and keep things...well, simple, plus I got a few of the A2 uppers for $48 from LAR.

I really like the Colt Model 723 (Forward Assist, brass deflector, A1 rear sight, 14.5" barrel w/grenade step) and 727 carbines, even with a Delta cheek piece and Aimpoint on the upper. They just feel more solid than a flat-top upper with elevated clamp mounts. My real desire is to have a Micro Red dot fit inside the protective ears of the A2 rear sight assembly, without being visible from the side. The Leupold Delta Point is the smallest of the Micros so far, but still hangs out. We'll get there soon enough.

3.25 MOA is fine for a CQB carbine, and fine for 300m shots as well, since the M16A2 front sight post is 11 MOA. A 3.25 MOA aiming device will allow me to hit man-size targets at 300-500m much better than I can with an M16A2, and I rarely missed the 300m E-type silhouettes with an M16A1, M16A2, or M4 even.

LR,

I would be interested to see how the Dr. Optic works out for you. I have no experience with them. Leupy's, Aimpoint Micro, and Trijicons round out my dot sights. keep us informed. Hope we didn't hijack the thread too much and hope we helped you out with your search for an optic.

I have one of these on my 5.56, and I absolutely love it. Gives a great field of view, and I'm not nice to my weapons in the field... She gets thrown around a bit and smacked hard sometimes. I play like I fight, so my military weapons got the same treatment as mine. I have never lost zero, and never had any equipment issues. I have had the same battery in it since I bought it (4 years ago) and she is strong as ever. I would highly recommend it. I don't think the recoil would be an issue with these.

Good deal. This is the type of feedback I like. Thinking of one of these with the Larue mount. Still not oppsed to the EOTECH. Im going to wait until I get home and try this one out and maybe an EOTECH.
