Slings and magazines for hunting
#1
OK, I'm going to stick with 120TTSX with 28.3g TAC for my hunting trip. 2408 fps will be more than adequate for the ranges we'll shoot at. A couple basic questions, having never hunted with my Grendel...... and I've only hunted once!

Can someone recommend a short list of slings? Two point? One point? I will be doing a fair amount of hiking in some very hilly terrain.

Also I only have 10 round magazines. Can I modify them to legally hunt in Washington or should I order a 5 Rd from AA?

Thx

Consider the 2-point Vtac padded sling with push-button swivels along with a Vtac 1-point adapter, add a few mounts at various positions on the rifle, and you would have numerous options at any given time.

Stan When I was looking for a sling I found this( http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_19/252462...rning.html ). So I decided to build one myself. But I could not find all the parts locally but at a local surplus store they had one like it for less than 15 bucks. I like the way it keeps the rifle comfortably well supported and in the ready position. As for magazines I bought a 2 C-Products 5 round and 2 10 round, depending how the laws are writen you could make a plug that blocks the follower from allowing more than 5 rounds. But in Maine the law says that it needs to be permanently blocked.

+1 million for the VTAC 2-point quick adjust with QD sling swivels, if you have the sockets in your furniture for them. 3-point slings are more trouble than they're worth. I used to make them by the dozen, until I came across the VTAC sling. I could no longer justify what I was doing, since the quick-adjust 2-point works so much better. You can adjust it immediately with one hand for whatever you're doing, to include cinching on your back while climbing, using as a tight shooting sling in a kneeling or standing position, carrying at a low ready across your front, or patrol carry. What type of furniture do you have?

http://www.opticsplanet.net/browning-x-c...lings.html I have all these slings on all my bolt action, lever action and even my AR style firearms. They are really nice especially if you have slings studs at both the forearm and buttstock. One handed operation if you want to loosen the strap. Very easy to tighten but I have to steady the strap with one hand and use my other hand to pull the strap taught. I don't like a baulky strap at all and as you can see in the link above that these are a real simple sling. They even come in camo bit I use black since my AR is black.

Dittos on the VTAC 2 point. It is great when you have to quickly transition to a pistol, or just sling and cinch it tight to your back while you run and climb obsticals, then have to bring it back on target for a pressure shot. Very versitle and makes the Gren comfortable to carry for extended periods while hunting.

I picked up a cheep single point a while back, but it carries the rifle too low for me. I'm going to find me a VTac 2 point tomorrow. As for mags I purchased a couple of five rounders from http://www.ammosc.com . They function good, and they are not too expensive. By the way, I can't find any thing in the Washington hunting regs that states a mag limit. But I still only carry my 5 round mags.

Just a 19.5 Hunter uppper; Rock River lower. I had a ff handguard installed. Scope is a Buckmaster 4-14x40. I am getting .7 MOA with my 120g TTTXs.

Looks like I'll go with the VTac 2 points....... I like being with lots of company.

Thank you gentlemen....

The VTAC is a fine sling, and I have one on my 5.56, but it's a "carrying" sling, not a "shooting" sling. I don't think it's going to provide you with any significant aid in the accuracy department. I've tried mine in a hasty sling role and it didn't work all that well.

The Tactical Intervention Quick- and Slip-Cuff slings are very convenient. If you want a more traditional cuff-less sling, the Rifles Only TAB Gear Sling is also good.

The original poster should call his local fish and game department and ask about mag size limit. Make sure that they quote you the section of the code that deals with the issue as you cannot trust that some of those people know the specific law. There is no limit in California and I use a standard 10 round magazine and just load 5 or 6 rounds but I could legally load more or use a larger magazine if I legally possessed it before the California AWB was pass into law (but that is another story). The 5 round mags by C products are the same as the 10 round (same body) but they have more coils in the spring so that the spring bottoms out faster. The 5 round magazine feels noticeably heavier than the 10 round magazine which is why I use the 10 rounders. Magazines also tend to be more reliable when they are not loaded to maximum capacity.

If you don't have the VTAC sling set-up optimally, you will not realize the superiority of its use as a shooting sling. I've used the traditional leather slings with arm loop that came with the M24, modern versions of it with the cuff loops, and various slings of that specific nature, and I still personally prefer the VTAC 2-point, because I can tighten it exactly to the dynamic tension that I need for whatever position I'm in, with whatever gear or clothing I'm wearing, and do so in about 1 second. You won't get that with many other slings on the market, other than the copies. So, from having used the VTAC Quick-Adjust slings on a regular basis since 2003, I must clarify that they are in fact, excellent shooting slings, as well as a carry sling for retention and transport, in various positions.

I credit the VTAC sling with my ability to beat a lot of other competitors on a flat-range stage with 400m distances, shooting from seated or kneeling positions behind steel drums, even though my zero was off. I had more rounds in the black than everyone else in a recognizable group, because they couldn't hold steady enough positions, and the ones that had slings all had examples of the slings listed above. The key to setting it up to facilitate this is allowing maximum adjustment of the sling to get tighter, which has everything to do with how you space the front and rear portions of the sling. If you don't leave yourself enough adjustment room in the front, the quick adjust buckle will hit your slide lock hardware, and limit you from making it any tighter.

They may not look sexy, or have tons of bells and whistles hanging off them like my old 3-point slings, but they are my sling of choice, and I could literally make anything I wanted to. The KISS rule really wins out here, in my experience. The biggest disadvantage with the VTAC sling is the excess running end being a possible snag hazard, but they addressed that a while ago with a keeper on the running end that you wrap around the main sling body to prevent it from hanging, if that bothers you. I just use hair bands on my older ones to do the same thing.

As for the sling, use whatever is comfortable for you. I've used everything from a single point, three point tactical and standard two point sling. In Washington state, It's cold and rainy for deer season. So, I have too layer clothes. A two point standard sling works well because it's easier to deal with when using the heavy clothes. But, like I said, whatever feels right. Don't bother dumping big bucks on a "big Name" sling. There are plenty of knock offs out there that work just as well.

As for the magazine. I called Washington fish and game because I wanted to make sure I was legal with my Grendel. They said the magazine size doesn't matter. I thought it had to be five, but the game warden said it doesn't matter. He told me he hunts with his 6.8 and has done well with it. I only have 25 round mags and that size mag is what I am comfortable with anyway. So, use whatever mags you have on hand. They are all legal in Washington State.

I ordered the non-padded version of the VTAC sling which set me back about $40 with shipping yesterday. I have not shot much other than from a bench, so I'll work on practicing with the sling. I'm a newbie to this sport..... one of those 2008 post-election statistics....... hence my basic questions

Dammit, also ordered a 5 Rd mag from AA for about the same price. Thank you for the info though Mutt.

Mutt I read your post about hunting styles. Where are you in Washington? I feel your pain in the knee department; I'm going on my second ever hunt in the hills above Tonasket where my cousin lives. Lots of walking up and down hills, and my knee twinged quite a bit 2 years ago, back when they mostly felt good. Not looking forward to it as much this year.

Sorry about that, thought I remembered that, but wanted to make sure.

I really like the .17 HMR on the AR platform. It's fun to shoot, cheaper than centerfire. Very accurate to beyond 100 yards.

It's not a magic caliber, but its a lot of fun!! Buy lots of extra mags! The more you buy, the cheaper they are.

I just purchased the VTAC sling and a low profile sling mount. Has anyone that has one of these run into a problem with the heavy duty QD swivel not securing itself to the mount? Hate to go through the hassle of sending the LPSM back if there is a quick and easy fix. I tried the other QD swivel also with the same result. Will not stay secured. Both QD swivels secure in my stock.

If I use a sling, I use a single point. If I need to switch to left handed shooting, no problem.
If I'm hunting dangerous game in Africa, I'll carry my rifle, usually my double, with a two point sling, barrel down behind my shoulder, and I can flip it off my shoulder into a shooting stance in an instant.
