If I had a .284 Winchester, that bad boy would be held close to the chest and not let go of. It and the 6.5x55 Mauser are two of the most capable cartridges that will handle any big game needs of the American hunter, with very minimal recoil, with an excellent selection of high SD projectiles.

You could go with low recoiling starter loads with 120gr bullets to start the kid off, then work up as she gains confidence with the rifle.

Know several that use reduced loads for hunting, with Hodgdon H4895 you can load the 284 with 120gr bullets down to Grendel type velocities with only a little more recoil from using a little more powder. Makes for an effective hunting round with little recoil.

Guys I am sorry for the mistake I made in the earlier pic. Kmon noticed the round looked like a regular 284 so I looked thru some other bags of brass and found some that I am sure were fire formed in this gun.

In this pic you should be able to see the different shoulder. That is the factory case(no fire formed) in the middle.

That does look altered, gaining a little more case volume, at the expense of shortening the neck even more.
