Remington 700 Grendel

I've got a Remmy 700 AAC-SD that is basically a POS, shooting 2" groups at 100. I'm planning a rebarrel and restock soon. Instead of going .308 I was kicking around the idea of chambering it in 6.5 Grendel using a PTG bolt with the PPC face.

The only problem I'm having is that I want it to feed off of the magazine, preferably a DBM. I want to keep (close anyway) the factory magazine length so I can load long.

I thought of doing a blind box magazine by milling off the front portion of an AR mag and with a little machine work, epoxying it into the stock. I'd rather have a DBM though. Any ideas?

If it helps I'm looking at 2 stocks right now, the XLR Industries but more likely a Manners carbon fiber with Badger bottom metal. Any ideas?

if I remember correctly, stokesrj posted something a while back about a company doing an add on for rem 700's that enables you to use ar mags. Ill try and do a search.

Hard call... If I were dealing with a .308 action size, I'd likely just go .260 Remington. But if you just want a Grendel then I'd say go for it.

I did a 700 remington bdl to Grendel. Started off as a .223- used a PT&D bolt. Wyatts Custom put on the barrel and did the (bdl) bottem metal. It feeds with NO problems EVER. He used a .308 follower. I think when I talked to him on the phone he offered to put a DBM on it-thats his speciality you know. but I declined. Put the whole thing in a B&C klevar stock and it shoots well under 1nch (like maye .4 inch) Good luck

Yeah I was leaning towards a 6.5X47 Lapua and may still go that route but I thought a short bolt action in 6.5 G would be fun to play with for awhile and I could see what I could get out of the cartridge without any restrictions on OAL.

Oh no problem man. That setup would be fine if I couldn't get it to work with a regular length 700 magazine. Also if I ever build a bolt action .223 I know what bottom metal I'm going to be running. Thanks man.

Since I can't afford a chassis system, my go to stock is the B&C Tactical Medalist. But, then again, it fits me perfect. I don't know if you would like it or not. Wyatts is a decent DBM. I've been wanting to do a Remington 700 Grendel myself. I know there are more powerful 6.5 cartridges out there. But, I like the Grendel for what it is.

They were on sale for a while for 199 bucks. I think they've gone up to 230 ..... but still a great price.

I was just talking with the guys from Lapua at a Wilderness Expo here in Finland. One of them has a 24" Sako 85 chambered in Grendel, and is getting 3083fps with the 123gr Scenar naked, using N550.

Do you think this is possible or do you think something was lost in translation? I do not think N-550 at about 30 grains has enough energy to push one of those bullets that fast out of any barrel. Not even if he jammed 35 grains of N-550. I figure someone can hit 3K fps with about 45 grains of 550 but that is impossible to get into a Grendel cartridge.

Have to consult with Wainamoinen on this one.

Yeah, I did a double-take when he said he's getting 940 m/s out of his rifle, and asked again and again. He speaks good English, and was pretty clear about the velocity. I made sure we were on the same page with barrel length, what chrono he was using, and his COAL. He said he's using the Lapua load manual recommended COAL. He also said he has 2 Grendels personally, not sure what type the other is.

The Grendel is a high-pressure case all day long, while the standard AR15 set-up can't approach those pressures. 45gr of N550 in a larger case volume can hit 3k yes, but the reduced volume has to account for some major pressure increase as well. I would believe 840 m/s no problem out of a bolt gun, but like you, I was quite taken aback about the 940 m/s figure.

A mutual friend of ours is getting 2700fps with the 139gr Scenar out of his 22" CZ527 using N140, so I'm trying to correlate that to a 24" pushing the 123gr with N550 at over 3000fps, which is a pretty huge jump, even with the lighter bullet and extra 2" of pipe. They said the barrel is a Sako 85 varmint length, which is 600mm, or 23.6".

Assuming 20fps/grain of bullet weight, that would give 320fps more MV than the 22" pushing the 139gr + 1.6" barrel length for the extra 30-40fps, so I guess it works out.
