That said, there's also a ballistics difference with Grendel, that I'm not sure shooters all quite get. With 5.56, the threshold of notable terminal effectiveness is thought to be 2700 FPS and/or ~800 ft-lb of energy for varmint class game (2 and 4 legged). Obviously this is ammo dependent, but even with basic ball, it's another world of effectiveness at and above those threashold levels (or so we all say). With 5.56, 14.5" is quite short, and will drop below those levels in a few dozen yards. 16" effectively doubles the range a shooter can meet that terminal effectiveness, and push it out to 100 yards or more. So in that case, on top of the whole effort, going from 16" down to 14.5" has a real cost.
Grendel however is very different. A 12" Grendel can have 1000 ft-lb of energy out to almost 200 yards (not quite, but close). That's 1000 ft-lb, not 800 - so we're talking deer and larger game level terminal performance. And also, Grendel out of a 12" BBL can still be supersonic out 800-1000 yard range. meaning it's still shooting pretty accurate, out that far. That is staggeringly effective performance out of something the almost the size of a tennis racket.
So baring that in mind, the performance increase of Grendel going from a 14.5" pin and weld, to a 16" with normal flash-hider, is quite little. You're not getting much advantage in performance, for the trade of a bigger gun. Obviously this adds up, and a 20" will much outperform a 12" Grendel. But a 16" vs 14.5", is much more slight in Grendel, then it is in 5.56; which is the benchmark standard most of us think around.
Which is why the 12" Grendel and the pistol craze was such a big hit. Like it or not, we lost and times are changing. Then some of us went full-retard and sacked the Capital; and so solidified and handed a blank-check for the next 2 years to what was going to be a very weak D' governmernt, and assured a Republican minority for quite a while now; not just 2 year that it was going to be. Meaning; change is coming - pistols are going away. If you do have a 12" Grendel. You better have a plan. you're about to get the chance to NFA it (for free maybe), or convert it to a rifle. And if you go the later, a pin and weld 14.5" is the closest you're going to get to the size and handling of that 12" (which was really a 13.5" with the muzzle device on it).
