20" Grendel and a M5 RAS

I have a KAC M5 RAS I want to use and really don't see the point of a 20" rifle anymore unless I step up to something like 6.5. Everybody preaches free float but in the real world would a decent Grendel upper with a M5 and Bipod be accurate enough to be a hunting rifle? 2 legged critters really only need minute of bad guy so I'm not worried there, just clean shots on white tails out to 300ish.

Just though I would bump this. Side note I will probably go 18" not 20 with the RAS

You could sell the RAS and get a free-float since there are a few people out there who like to build M16A4 clones, or...

Put a DCM free-float tube under it maybe with some mods

Ii would keep the 20" if you're 6ft or taller and are using the M5 RAS.

As hunter I agree with your thinking, is a free floating handguard necessary, no. Out to 300ish you should do well.

Because the Grendel is such an inherently accurate cartridge a lot of the members here are always trying to push the envelope to get most out of their rifles. I know that I've done it, a free floating handguard is one of those simple things that can improve accuracy for not a lot of money. You also get the advantages of installing different accessories, such as a bi-pod. If that improvement is worth the money only you can make that decision. Bottom line, set-up your rifle the way you want, as long as it meet your requirements, it's a winner.
