Stumbled upon this site looking for a different AR caliber than 5.56. I have a completed lower looking for a decent hunting/medium range target shooting upper. Im more of a reader than a poster on forums so I look forward to learning as much as I can! Thanks!

Welcome to the forum Schick! A 16 or 18 6.5 Grendel AR-15 makes a handy size. I also have a 12 pistol build which could be used for hunting in dense terrain. The high ballistic coefficient bullets helps a lot with the 6.5 Grendel. The 129 grain Nosler AccuBond Long Range (ABLR) expands down to 1300 FPS and has been used effectively in hunting. Nosler and Precision Firearms sell ammunition loaded with this bullet or you can load your own.

Welcome to the clan, Sk, from the great nation of Texas! You don't state whether you wanna role your own or buy a ready made upper. There is a wealth of information across these threads about both. If you choose to build one, the core of the success is in the barrel selection and then the assembly methodologies. The Grendel is capable of incredeble accuracy when built with care. And, in case you haven't seen it across these chapters, be forwarned! The Grendel is a prolific little beast and, when left alone will multiply rather quickly.

I'm looking more at the 18" variety but unfortunately the boss lady says my budget is $400-450 and thats with a couple foot/back rubs! Building could be an option but most likely will buy assembled for my first entry into the 6.5 platform.

The Monster 16 barrel and Toolcraft BCG with a cheap hand guard will probably be about the only way to build an upper for around $400. I would not recommend Bear Creek Arsenal which are also sold by several other vendors like Midway AR Stoner. From the Texas panhandle. Feel like I need a bit more rifle for deer hunting.
I came across this site while waiting for my barrel to become available. Its a long story. However I'm swapping a 300bo for a grendel on an AR upper. Information is what brought me here. Thanks in advance for any help. |
