I spent the last weekend at a known distance Appleseed shoot. Nothing crazy but shooting off slings only out to 400yds. I didn't have terribly high hopes for my build which centered around a 16" BCA barrel. I was however, pleasantly surprised by the results. I was able to shoot "rifleman" several times and was easily hitting steel at 400 with consistency once I found out where the hold in my reticle was. Did I get lucky? probably..i was shooting a combination of American Gunner and Black and they hit close enough at distance to not warrant any scope adjustments. At any rate, I figured I'd share my experience with around 400rnds sent downrange over a two day event
Congrats on getting Rifleman OP! I haven't done an Appleseed event yet, but I might get around to it someday.
A budget AR might not be "moa all day", but when you get down to practical shooting like Appleseed teaches, the inherent accuracy of even a mediocre rifle is less important than the capabilities of the person wielding it.
I used my BCA 16in Grendel at a competitive shoot in October and got first round hits on everything except an IPSC steel target at 460yd, I got my hold wrong. My experience is echoed by yours.
I need to push my optic forward as far is it'll go in the mount but after I do that, some time making groups at 100yds off a bag will be spent. it may not be an MOA all day shooter....but I don't think it's far off of it.

Thanks! I'd shot rifleman once before at a rimfire shoot and that was plenty hard especially after focusing almost exclusively on handguns for the last 10 years or so. At any rate, I'm extremely encouraged by this rifle and the round....the sound it made hitting steel at 400 was a thing of beauty. There was no mistaking my hit for the guys shooting .223.
Nice, looks like the range at Ramseur. Been there a couple of times with my son, he made Rifleman on the 25 Yard and got his KD rocker too. I got the 25 Yard Rifleman but my .308 AR10 was a little too much to handle for the KD. Been thinking about going back with a 5.56 or a 6.5G to try agian.

it is indeed Ramseur. I think you'd have a good time bringing a 6.5 to the KD shoot. They have steel out there now too which makes the 400yd shots really satisfying. Makes a very authoritative thump on steel out that far.
