Who makes the strongest upper receiver?

Im not sure, maybe someone will measure theirs (AA A3 upper) and post here what they get. My lo-pro after milling for a side charger is .498 at the inside(smallest measurement). All my A3's are .496-.500. IIRC, I measured the lo-pro when I first got it and decided that it would work with no machining unless extractor was bent or the extr. spring was too weak/strong. My cousin has the other lo-pro I finally sold him, Ill measure maybe this weekend. It hasnt been milled out at all.

Grendel uses a standard ejection port, Beowulf uses a larger ejection port.

Can I hear some updated thoughts ? I want the cheapest thick walled upper I can find. Any ideas ? I was going to buy the cheapest upper I can find, ($41.95 Anderson upper on joebobs) but I figured for precision on my 24" bull barrel I should get a heavy walled upper. I was hoping to only spend on my scope barrel and trigger, but the end goal is precision so it's worth spending a little more.

Also check out Seekins Precision billet uppers and companies like Lewis Machine and Tool (LMT) and Mega's one piece uppers.

Thank you. I can't seem to find a lmt stripped upper. Also to save on costs I think I'd rather forged over billet.

I just completed a Grendel build using an Aero Precision M4E1. I wanted a stronger mounting point at the front of the upper since I wasn't building light weight. Not cheap for forged, but way cheaper than billet. Anyone else consider them? I love it and plan to use for future builds... Did I make the wrong choice in the eyes of the Grendel world?

It's an interesting idea to integrate the connection between the upper and the handguard, but it doesn't seem like the upper itself has thicker walls.

I like the vltor but watch the fit on some lowers- mine is über tight on a psa lower. I did have the lower cera coated so I don't know if that contributed to the fit. The rear pin has to be tapped out with a punch. Of course that may be desired by some

Keep in mind that AR15 receivers last indefinitely in high volume, full auto fire where multiple barrels and bolts are shot to the point of being deadlined and replaced.

The receivers keep on going.

If you want to support a heavy, longer barrel, I personally like billet receivers, leaning to Mega or Seekins.

So does this mean that although my goal is accuracy with a 24" bull barrel it would be a better idea for me to save the $140 and just get the Anderson lower and use that money to upgrade my trigger from a RRA to a Geissele DMR ?

I agree with Joseph5 on the trigger.
I'm new to AR builds and come to AR's from a precision long range bolt action view point. Trued actions and perfect barrel to action mating is a big deal.
With these AR's Mr. Stoner turned that on its head by moving the lock up to just the bolt & barrel.
I've noticed that some vendors are offering serialized matching bolts with the barrels they are selling, this makes a lot of sense. I wish more did the same.
With all the variables between Grendel 1 & Grendel 2 I suggest you find a friend who has a set of go - no go gauges and make damn sure the headspace is correct.
I also went ahead and invested in a MEGA billet upper & lower for my 1st 223 Wylde build. The upper to lower fit of the two billets is perfect. When comparing to a RRA Predator or a Colt National Match they rattle. This rattle does not sit well with me, while others will say this is a non-factor.
Bottom line what are you going to do with your build? Punch paper recreationally on "range days" at your local club, shoot a prairie dog or two, or go the competitive shoots? I.E. F-class? Is an occasional flyer acceptable? Are you going for 10 shot groups or cold barrel 3 shot groups?

I am planning on using a Gibbz billet upper and billet lower. Both look pretty heavy and well made.

I think my Sun Devil billet upper lower is pretty stout. Has the take up screw to take what little play ther is out of the fit.

I got the Sun Devil billet receiver set when I assembled my 6.5 Grendel. It has very thick upper receiver walls and the upper to lower fit was very tight! No wiggle or play at all without using the built in tightening screw. I have to tap out the receiver pins to disassemble it. That is how tight the fit is. The Cerakote job left a lot to be desired. It was rubbing off just putting the BCG into the upper and moving it back and forth. I suspect that it missed getting baked after application. I would not hesitate to buy another set from them, just an anodized one though. Another receiver set I have heard nothing but good about are the ones from Precision Firearms. They are finished exceptionally well and have nice thick receiver walls and fit togethoer very tight.

I wish I can afford a Gibbz or sundevil but I'm saving up for my barrel and trigger. I'm trying to decide between the DPMS lo pro and the Spartan smooth operator from joebobs, it's the cheapest billet upper I can find at $90. So which one do you think is more rigid, a beefed up forged upper or a billet upper ?

I'll bet this would be a good one. It's extruded like the DPMS and perhaps even thicker.
