Litz Studies Effect of Twist on Velocity

In the history of both the 6.8 SPC and the 6.5 Grendel there has been quite a bit of discussion and "armchair" gunsmithing regarding the effect of twist rates on velocity.

In one particular camp, it's been claimed that differences in twist can account for up to 200 fps velocity gain.

Bryan Litz would say, "Uh . . . it's more like 1.33 fps gain per inch of barrel twist rate."

BFT Good info in this article. I noticed that this carefully constructed test yielded only a few ft/sec between conventional rifling and 5R. I remember we had a fellow that used to post here and he claimed 200 ft/sec higher velocity with his 5R Grendel barrel. I think I will trust Litz on this one.

Great article, it pays to get all the facts.

I would be more interested in accuracy- between the twist rates, and different bullet wts., - the Grrr spits out bullets in the 1700-2000 mph. range. = 123-80 grn. pills.- @ 2500-3100 fps.
